Robert Smith of The Cure was interviewed earlier this evening and updated fans on a new Cure record.
The short version of the story: yes, there's a Cure record (or two) in the works. There is no telling when it will be out.
Smith made his remarks in an interview that took place after the NME Awards earlier tonight, where The Cure won the NME Award for Best Festival Headliner.
After the ceremony, NME caught up with Smith to chit chat about winning the award and playing live. The discussion then turned to the new Cure record, which has now been in the works for a few years. The reported asked Smith if there would be one, two, or three new Cure records out this year. Smith initially responded with, "You're lucky to get one, the way I'm working," then quickly walked it back, stating "the first one will definitely be out...we're wrapping it up now."
Upon further questioning Smith said there will be one new Cure record, possibly two, but definitely not three. The third album he previously spoke about in interviews last year is not happening because he said it turned out to be just "noise."
Though Smith did confirm at least one new Cure record would eventually be released, he didn't say when. He did acknowledge that Cure fans are used to Smith crying wolf when it comes to new records/projects, and stated "until it's out, no one's going to believe me."
When the reporter attempted to get Smith to commit to saying the new Cure album will definitely be out in 2020, Smith wasn't having it. He laughed and said, "I'm too old to commit to idiot things like that. Wait and see."
