New Order announce 'New Order: Transmissions' documentary series

New Order announced they've created an exciting new video series documenting their debut album Movement. The first episode of the weekly series New Order: Transmissions premieres next Thursday, March 7th on the band's You Tube channel and features candid interviews with Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert.

The trailer for the series premiered today and looks to be brimming with interesting moments and insightful commentary from this legendary band. This is the story of New Order told by New Order in their own words.

View the magnificent trailer below and get ready for the debut episode on March 7th.

Transmissions leads up to and celebrates the release of the Movement Definitive Edition box set. The four piece set (1LP/2CD/1DVD) arrives April 5th and contains a copy of Movement on vinyl, a copy of Movement on CD, a bonus CD with previously unreleased tracks (Western Works and Cargo demos, rehearsal versions and more), a DVD collecting live concert recordings from 1980/81 along with their Granada TV and BBC appearances, plus a hard back book. Pre-order here.

Besides the New Order: Transmissions series, March will be a BIG month for New Order -- as previously reported New Order will reissue remastered editions of four iconic non-album Movement era singles in March: both versions of "Ceremony" (original and re-recorded versions) will be released March 8th; "Everythings Gone Green" follows March 15th (with the correct tracklisting for "Mesh" and "Cries And Whispers"!); and "Temptation" wraps up the reissue series on March 23rd. Head here to pre-order.

New Order's "Round & Round" released 30 years ago

New Order's glorious synth-smash "Round & Round" was released as a single 30 years ago today. The song appeared on Technique, which was released in January of 1989, however a single version of the track was recorded and issued on 7" and 12" on February 27th, 1989 due to the insistence of Tony Wilson.

Like the parent album Technique, the Peter Saville-designed cover art for "Round & Round" features a statue, however it's a different statue than the one gracing Technique. Factory reportedly sold replicas of the statue titled "Little Lewie for New Order" in promotion of the single.

"Round & Round" remains one of New Order's finest dance floor booty-shaking anthems in their exceptional career.

XTC's 'Oranges & Lemons' turns 30 years old

XTC's superb double record Oranges & Lemons was released 30 years ago today. The intriguing psychedelic cover art promised aural goodness; the album delivered and then some!

The fifteen track record is brimming with brilliant songwriting -- most of the tracks were written by Andy Partridge, though Colin Moulding represented with a few songs including the eternally addictive "King For A Day" which is one of the standouts on this incredible record alongside "The Mayor Of Simpleton," "The Loving," "Chalkhills And Children," "Garden Of Earthly Delights," and more.

Oranges & Lemons was technically the follow up to the 1986 (North American) breakthrough Skylarking, though the band had managed to sneak in a phenomenal Dukes of Stratosphear record between the proper XTC releases.

Although Skylarking still seems to receive the most attention from XTC fans in the U.S. (or at least seems to be the best known album), Oranges & Lemons yielded XTC's biggest charting single in the U.S., "The Mayor Of Simpleton." [Not that a charting single equals a better song -- obviously ALL of XTC's music is wonderful, just not as widely appreciated, which is a shame indeed for this underrated gem of a band.]

Happy 30th!

Andy Anderson, R.I.P.

Andy Anderson, who drummed for The Cure from 1983 through 1984 has died at the age of 68. Lol Tolhurst confirmed the sad news this afternoon on social media.

A week ago Anderson revealed to fans on Facebook that he had terminal cancer. He indicated at the time he was exploring treatment options but stated that the cancer was irreversible.

Anderson played on The Cure's The Top and Concert: The Cure Live along with the Japanese Whispers songs "The Lovecats" and "Speak My Language" He also played drums on Blue Sunshine, the album from the Robert Smith/Steve Severin project The Glove; he then launched a successful career as a session musician playing with Iggy Pop, Glen Matlock, Sham 69, and many others.

R.I.P. to an amazing drummer and gentleman.

Gang Of Four US tour cut short after Andy Gill hospitalized

Gang Of Four were forced to cut their North American tour short after Andy Gill was hospitalized with a serious chest infection. Gill initially hoped he'd be out of the hospital in time to perform the last show on tour -- last night's sold out show in Brooklyn -- however due to the severity of Gill's condition he was ordered to remain hospitalized.

The band issued a statement today apologizing to fans for the last minute cancellation and promise they'll make it up to fans on their next trip to New York. The statement is available to read in full below.

Meanwhile, send your love and healing thoughts to Gill as he recuperates from his illness.

Gang Of Four release their new album Happy Now March 1st. The first single "Paper Thin" is available to stream below.

"Last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY, we were unfortunately forced to cancel our show - the last performance on our US Tour - as we were set to take the stage to a packed audience.

Struggling with a serious chest infection that had been developing ower the last week while on the road, Andy was rushed to the hospital early in the afternoon on Monday, February 25, 2019, with hopes he could get the necessary treatment and be released before show time at 9:30pm. With every effort to get on stage, the night progressed as planned. Sticking it out till the very last minute, we hoped for the best outcome - a slight delay in set time, and prepared to take the stage.

Recognizing the seriousness of Andy's condition, the medical team felt otherwise and delayed Andy's discharge from the hospital. When it became apparent that Andy would not be returning in time, the crew, band and Andy (on speakerphone), made the very difficult decision to cancel the show.

We are heartbroken we could not deliver a promised great end to the tour. With Andy's health as a top priority, we apologize to the fans who had come out to support us and promise that the next time we return to NYC, not only will Andy and the band be in top shape, we'll give the show an added push to give back to the fans."

R.I.P. Mark Hollis

Mark Hollis, the brilliant singer/songwriter and founder of Talk Talk has died. Multiple sites in the U.K. are reporting Hollis' death, however an official statement has not been issued. The (apparently) official Talk Talk/Mark Hollis Facebook page seemed to confirm the news by posting a screenshot of a family member's tweet.  Hollis was 64 years old.

Hollis was a musical genius and created an exceptional body of work. He was so talented -- not only did he create perfect pop gems found on Talk Talk's early records, but he was able to successfully transition from pop into crafting stunning experimental works. His music was timeless, beautiful, exquisite, and divine. An extraordinary iconic musician who gave so much to the world of music. We are all incredibly lucky to have been the beneficiaries of his majestic talent.

Truly heartbreaking news.

R.I.P.

UPDATE: Hollis' manager Keith Aspden confirmed to the BBC that Hollis died "after a short illness from which he never recovered."

Talk Talk's bassist Paul Webb posted the following statement in tribute to Hollis:

"I am very shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mark Hollis. Musically he was a genius and it was a honour and a privilege to have been in a band with him. I have not seen Mark for many years, but like many musicians of our generation I have been profoundly influenced by his trailblazing musical ideas. He knew how to create a depth of feeling with sound and space like no other. He was one of the greats, if not the greatest."

The Dream Syndicate announce new LP 'These Times'

The Dream Syndicate announced the release of a new album These Times. The album, which arrives on May 3rd, is the second full length release post-reuniting in 2012. Steve Wynn wrote the lyrics to the 10 track album were written after the band finished tracking, thus the lyrics were dictated by the sound of the music instead of vice versa. Wynn reveals the theme of the album is a commentary on life and times of the world we live in these days:

"These Times. That’s it. It is all we’re talking about, all we’re thinking about. There is no avoiding the existential panic of a world that’s hurtling somewhere quickly, evolving, and shifting course by the hour. It seems like a lie to not address or reflect the things that we can’t stop thinking about—the whole world’s watching indeed. The lyrics are just a mirror of the dread, panic, mania, speculation, melancholy and ultimately shrugging abandonment that just might follow. It’s just all about where we are."

Morrissey is making his grand return to Canada in April with his first live shows in the country in over 15 years.

Morrissey has been boycotting Canada since 2006 due to the country's acceptance of various anti-animal practices/activities including the annual Seal Hunt. Last September Moz announced he was reversing his boycott admitting it "was ultimately of no use and helped no one" but hoped he could make an impact with charitable donations, promising:

"On my return to Canada I feel that I can be of more use by making sizeable donations to animal protection groups in each city that I play."

Morrissey pays tribute to Albert Finney

Salford actor Albert Finney today died at the age of 82. The BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) winner and Academy Award nominee starred in an impressive number of critically acclaimed films between 1959 through 2012 including Murder On The Orient Express, Charlie Bubbles, Scrooge, Skyfall, Erin Brockovich, and also graced the cover of the demo version of "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" by The Smiths. The 7" was released in 2017 and was the first single issued by the Smiths in over 20 years.

Morrissey posted a tribute to Finney on his website which you can read below.

" … he dies, a part of me dies … his refusal to accept a Knighthood - that moronic delusion of inclusion - elevates him further in the Arts and humanities. Albert was Manchester.

Please watch Charlie Bubbles. … … there must be something I can dream tonight … "
