Mute recording artists including The Normal, Depeche Mode, New Order, Shadowparty, Erasure, Afghan Whigs, Laibach and more are featured on a unique new audio/visual boxset titled STUMM433. The 50+ artists featured on the set have all covered/interpreted one piece of music: 4'33" - the experimental mind-bending John Cage composition. Cage's unconventional composition challenged society to think outside the box -- the 1952 score instructs the performer to NOT play their instrument/s for the duration of the piece to allow ambient noise to take center stage, thereby forcing artists and listeners to experience silence and sound in a different way.
Each artist on STUMM433 has created a visual to accompany their performance of 4'33" - to illustrate, view the first taste of the collection -- Laibach's interpretation/performance of 4'33" -- below and head here for more info on the release.
STUMM433 will be released in May (date to be announced) and is part of Mute's ongoing 4.0 (1978 > Tomorrow) series that kicked off in 2018 and features special events and releases. Proceeds from STUMM433 benefit two charities - British Tinnitus Association and Music Minds Matter. These charities were chosen in honor of Inspiral Carpets' drummer Craig Gill. Gill suffered from depression and anxiety secondary to tinnitus and died by suicide in 2016.
