Dinosaur Jr announce fall tour

Dinosaur Jr announced plans for a fall North American tour with Mastodon. The tour bypasses the Detroit area, however they are playing Grand Rapids on September 15th. Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday, May 4th. Visit Dinosaur Jr's website for more info and pre-sale links.

David J reveals details behind strained relationship with Daniel Ash

In a lengthy posting on Facebook, ex-Bauhaus/Love And Rockets bassist David J Haskins (aka David J) made some comments regarding his strained relationship with ex-bandmate Daniel Ash. The comments were part of a larger post regarding his memoir Who Killed Mister Moonlight? Bauhaus, Black Magick and Benediction, which was initially published in 2014 and has recently been repressed.

The post begins with Haskins lamenting that he found a typo in the new edition of his memoir, but revealed that the typo has now encouraged him to once again try to get in touch with Ash. Ash apparently wasn't thrilled with some of the content included in the initial pressing of the memoir and previously refused a copy, but Haskins is motivated to reach out to him again. He gave fans the history of the situation in a post titled Of Typos, Tantrums and Transcendence. Here's an excerpt from that posting:

"Daniel had taken umbrage over the fact that in the first edition I had given away the sacred secret of the Bela chords. (‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ the band’s phenomenally successful first single.) A series of angry emails to me ensued. As I tried to explain, these particular chords were not exactly out of the public domain as there are several bedroom tutorials on YouTube etc showing guitar players clearly demonstrating how to play the song. Well, he just wasn’t having it and voiced his outrage over this perceived indiscretion in no uncertain terms. He was also somewhat concerned that I had also mentioned that the descending pattern used in our Gothic anthem was inspired by ‘Rock n’ Roll’ (Parts 1 & 2) by Gary Glitter.

“David! What if Gary Glitter decides to sue us?”

As I retorted as the time, Gary Glitter had been arrested for serial statuary rape and is currently in prison serving a a very long sentence at Her Majesty’s pleasure and is not exactly in a position to sue anybody! Still, out of deference I did remove the offending sentences from the next edition.

 I actually have the impression that Daniel has not read the thing but has been told of it’s contents by a personal aide-de-camp. I mailed him a copy of the book when it first came out along with a rather soulful and heartfelt letter but the package was returned to me unopened. Thinking that he had changed his PO box I dropped him an email requesting that he send me the new address so that I could resend the package.

 In response I received a terse: ‘No thanks!’ Our relationship was somewhat strained following this incident although of late it has been much improved, cordial even.

 Anyway, seeing this latest typo has prompted me to make the decision to try again and mail out another copy the tome. Thinking about it, this actually makes that little typo part of Bauhaus band lore! This time I really hope that the gift doesn’t come back. We shall see!"

Peter Hook dusts off rarities for North American tour kickoff

Peter Hook & The Light returned to the stage in North America last night. The Substance tour kicked off at Union Station in Philadelphia, and from fan accounts on social media Hooky and the band delivered an incredible live performance as always. They ripped through beloved Substance treasures and as promised Hook dug deep into New Order's catalog for a few rarities including the Peel Session classics "Turn The Heater On" (New Order covered the Keith Hudson reggae jam in tribute to Ian Curtis during their Peel Session in 1982) and "Too Late."

Peter Hook & The Light play Brooklyn Steel in New York tonight and will be rolling through the Detroit area next week at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Tickets for the May 3rd show are available here.

Teenage Fanclub announce vinyl reissues + tour Creation LPs

Exciting news for Teenage Fanclub fans - the legendary band announced remastered vinyl reissues of their classic albums are on the way. Five albums Bandwagonesque, Thirteen, Grand Prix, Songs From Northern Britain, and Howdy! are set for release on August 10th. This is incredible news considering the records have been out of print for years and were in dire need of remastering. All five records have been remastered from the original tapes and will be pressed on 180 gm vinyl. The first press editions of each release come with a bonus 7" single featuring two tracks previously unavailable on vinyl.

Meanwhile, Teenage Fanclub have also announced they'll perform a swoonworthy series of gigs this autumn focusing on their Creation years. They'll perform three consecutive nights in each city with each night focusing on a different TFC era:

Night 1: Songs from 1991 - 1993
Night 2: Songs from 1994 - 1997
Night 3: Songs from 1998 - 2000

The tour is limited to four cities in the UK; so far no North American dates have been announced.

4AD reissuing The Breeders' back catalog on vinyl

The Breeders' back catalog will be reissued on vinyl by 4AD. Pod, Last Splash, Title TK, and Mountain Battles arrive May 18th and are available to pre-order now. Of note, this is the first time Pod and Last Splash have been issued on vinyl by 4AD in North America.

The Breeders' classic Last Splash lineup reunited in 2015 and released a new album All Nerve last month. The band is currently on the road supporting the release in North America.

Video: Watch Patti Smith belt out "People Have The Power" with Michael Stipe

Last night the documentary Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. After the screening, Smith took the stage at New York's Beacon Theater and performed with a few of her legendary friends. Watch Smith belt out "People Have The Power" featuring Michael Stipe on backup vocals and "Because The Night" with Bruce Springsteen via Pitchfork.

Horses: Patti Smith and Her Band chronicles Smith's 40th anniversary Horses tour which took place in 2015. The film includes backstage footage and the full performance from the Los Angeles stop at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. The film will be available to stream exclusively on Apple Music beginning May 22.

My Bloody Valentine announce six U.S. shows

My Bloody Valentine announced a handful of North American shows today. The legendary shoegaze band will play New York, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Saint Paul. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 27th. Don't forget your ear plugs!

My Bloody Valentine have been working on new material which may or may not come out in 2018. Kevin Shields has done several interviews over the last year and told Pitchfork in November that a new MBV album will "100% be released in 2018":

"Oh, we one hundred percent will. One hundred percent. Basically, the record started off as an EP, and I realized it has to be, like, a mini-album, because it’s going to be at least 40 minutes long. So it’s going to be an album, but I don’t really know how many tracks it’s going to be. It’ll probably be seven or eight, by the looks of it."

However in a recent interview with Sound On Sound, Shields claims MBV will release a new EP this summer, with a second EP to follow in 2019.

As MBV fans know all too well, Shields loves to talk a pretty big game so don't hold your breath waiting for new material -- just enjoy it when it finally does arrive!

Third Man Records releasing Dinosaur Jr seven inch single

Third Man Records announced the release of a live Dinosaur Jr single. The 7" single was captured live at TMR's headquarters in Nashville and will be released as part of the label's Blue Room Sessions series. Bands are invited to record a short session of two or more songs of their choosing at Blue Room in Nashville; Third Man then presses and releases the live recording. The Dinosaur Jr single features "Goin' Down" backed with "Tiny" and will be released on May 4th. Pre-order now from Third Man.

Simple Minds celebrate 40 years with career-spanning North American tour

Simple Minds return to North America this autumn for a career-spanning tour celebrating their 40th anniversary. The legendary band will perform two full sets each night filled with iconic songs from their catalog along with tracks from their latest album Walk Between Worlds.



Tickets for the tour, which includes an October 14th stop at the Fillmore Detroit go on sale this Friday, April 27th at 10am. Pre-sales kick off this Wednesday, April 25th at 10am. Details on the tour and pre-sales are posted here.

Garbage announce U.S. dates for 'Version 2.0' anniversary tour

Last month Garbage announced an expanded 20th anniversary edition of Version 2.0 which arrives June 22nd. The band will be supporting the release with an anniversary tour which will see the band playing the 1998 album in full. Today they announced dates for the U.S. leg of their tour, which bypasses the Detroit area. Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday, April 27th.

Peter Murphy plays first show since 2016; reunites with David J

Peter Murphy returned to the stage last night and reunited with his ex-Bauhaus bandmate, bassist David J. at the Roxy Festival in Gadalajara, Mexico. The pair dazzled the crowd with an ten song set that wrapped up with an abbreviated version of "Ziggy Stardust" which was cut short after going over curfew. So far video from the set has not appeared online, however the setlist is available to view below.

Last night's performance was Murphy's first since 2016, though he's made several valiant attempts to get back on stage: his tour plans for 2017 were cut short after developing vocal cord issues, then earlier this year Murphy's rescheduled San Francisco residency dates were pushed back again after he was unable to gain entry in the United States. Murphy's immigration issues are expected to be resolved and his San Francisco residency at The Chapel has been rescheduled to kick off on June 26th.

New Order play Cleveland in August

New Order have been announced as one of the headliners for the inaugural Incuya Music Festival in Cleveland. The festival takes place in downtown Cleveland on August 25th and 26th. Single day lineups have not been announced, but if you want to take your chances early bird tickets go on sale this Tuesday, April 24th at 10am ET. Head here for the info.

Meanwhile, Peter Hook kicks off his North American Substance tour next week. The show includes a stop at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on May 3rd. Tickets are available here.

Happy Birthday Robert Smith!

Happy Birthday to Robert Smith! Smith was born on this day in 1959 and would go on to establish one of the most seminal bands in music history. Celebrate with some vintage Cure footage below.

Start with the rare solo performance by Robert Smith taken from The Cure's 2012 appearance at Bilbao. During The Cure's set the power went out and while the band left the stage to figure out what to do, Smith entertained the crowd with a three song acoustic performance. Smith revealed earlier this month that he hates playing on stage solo because he "gets lonely."

Thom Yorke AV installation debuts in Berlin

Thom Yorke recently collaborated with composer Tarik Barri to create City Rats - a surround audio visual installation. The full project will be on display in Berlin's ISM Hexadome tomorrow (April 21st). Barri says of the project:

"All sounds are visible as objects in 3D space, and the camera's position determines what we hear and where we hear it, so all harmonies, voices, melodies and rhythms are the result of our flight through space."

David Bowie's 'Aladdin Sane' turns 45

David Bowie's iconic album Aladdin Sane turns 45 years old today. The record was influential and not just because of the music; certainly the music was creative and genius, but maybe even more important than that was the album's intriguing and powerful cover art. The iconic artwork illustrated that whatever was inside was going to be different, and not only was being different OK, it was something to celebrate. Bowie made us feel that it didn't matter if we were weirdos; in fact, he taught us to channel our weirdness and run with it.

Aladdin Sane was thought to have been released on April 13th, 1973 and thus anniversary festivities have occurred on that day for years, however back in February Bowie's estate revealed the seminal album was actually released on April 20th. From the posting on Bowie's website:

"Previously thought to have been issued on 13th April, 1973, new evidence has come to light that proves the release date was officially the 20th, but being Good Friday in the UK the album was 'made available' on the 19th."

To mark the important occasion, Parlophone is releasing a limited edition of Aladdin Sane on silver vinyl today. The release is available exclusively in record shops while supplies last and is NOT connected to Record Store Day, which takes place tomorrow (April 21st). Good luck obtaining a copy!

Noel Gallagher talks Paul Weller & U2; new documentary features Johnny Marr

Two interesting videos for you to check out if you're a fan of Noel Gallagher.

Discogs premiered a documentary about Gallagher's third solo album Who Built The Moon?. The short film provides a glimpse into the making of Gallagher's psychedelic pop record and features commentary from producer David Holmes, engineer Emre Ramazanoglu, and legendary guitar god Johnny Marr, who appears on the song "If Love Is The Law." Holmes discussed instructing Gallagher to come to the studio without any songs and only a bagful of guitar pedals. The producer marveled at Gallagher's guitar playing and Gallagher's addiction to guitar pedals, joking that Gallagher seemingly traded in his drug addiction for a pedal addiction.

Who Built The Moon? is sonically different than Gallagher's previous albums and has seemed to divide public opinion. Marr offered up his philosophy on branching out and fan reaction:

"I think if you make a record that splits opinion is a good thing as long as it's a good record.

 If you've been around a long time you're always going to have people mouth off and have certain kinds of opinions if you break out of the norm a bit, that's understandable. The spirit of what he does, the key thing is still there and the proof is when you go to his gigs and the audience generally love the new stuff. Considering the love that's there for the old stuff, he's doing all right!"

Meanwhile Gallagher recently appeared on Lars Ulrich's show It's Electric and chatted about Gallagher's solo career, Oasis, and their shared love for U2. Gallagher called U2 his "favorite live band ever" and gave them props for their evolving sound and continual raising-of-the-bar. He saved his most glowing love and respect for Paul Weller revealing "he's in it for only pure reasons - the music, the gigs, the clothes - he wants to be the guy. Such an inspiring dude."

Poptone ft Kevin Haskins & Daniel Ash share "Go" from LP

Kevin Haskins and Daniel Ash launched Poptone last year and have been playing updated versions of classics from their old bands Tones On Tail and Love and Rockets on tour. The trio, which also features Haskins' daughter Diva, will be releasing a live album on June 8th. The album's 13 tracks were originally recorded for a Part Time Punks session on KXLU and will be released on CD, 2LP pressed on white vinyl, and digital album download. Pre-order here. Heads up to fans on the West coast: advance copies will be available at Poptone's live shows next month.

The Damned premiere "Look Left" video

The Damned released their critically acclaimed new album Evil Spirits earlier this month. The legendary band hooked up with legendary producer Tony Visconti for this notable return. This week they shared the mostly-performance video for the song "Look Left" which was written by drummer Pinch.

Pinch explained the meaning behind the song:

“While everybody's looking left, what the hell is happening right? Tough subject matter is easier to digest when coated in honey rather than vinegar and the message in this song is so important, I couldn’t risk it being a throw away aggro punk tune that was immediately overlooked. I see it more as a love song to the human race. The future is here, and until you awaken your mind, I’ll wait for you.”

Pinch wasn't able to make it to video shoot in London, but he's still featured performing via a television in the video. Check it out below:

Gang Of Four return with 'Complicit' EP; new LP due in June

Gang Of Four return with a four track EP titled Complicit tomorrow. The EP already generated a lot of interest due to its cover star - Ivanka Trump - and there's even more buzz now that Gang Of Four premiered the first song. "Ivanka (Things You Can't Have)," which premiered this week features lyrics taken from statements Ivanka has made backed by an electro beat.

Andy Gill's statement on the song:

"It would’ve been easy to be extremely damning about Donald Trump and of course, like everyone else, I could have called him all kinds of names. What drew me to this subject at all was the running commentary from Ivanka in the earlier stages of this administration—it was fascinating to get a kind of explanation or justification from the daughter who had already been given an official position within the White House. And frankly, a lot of it was pretty funny. But although the characters in the Trump family are interesting, it’s more the ideologies and politics which they represent and enable which need describing."

Meanwhile in a new interview Gill revealed that he's working on a full length Gang Of Four album that will be out in June. He told Spill that he's about eight songs in at this point and may include a couple of songs from the Complicit EP. He's still figuring out which direction to take, revealing "the exciting thing to me is there's still a number of different ways we could go."

Mazzy Star announce new EP; premiere magnificent first track

Mazzy Star are back with a magnificent stunner "Quiet, The Winter Harbor." The delicate and sublime song is the first taste off their forthcoming EP Still, which arrives on June 1st. The four track EP also includes an alternate version of "So Tonight That I Might See," the album closer/title track from their brilliant 1993 record. Stream "Quiet, The Winter Harbor" below via NPR.

Still is the first taste of new music from Mazzy Star since 2013's full length Seasons Of Your Day and a pair of Record Store Day singles in 2014, though Hope Sandoval has been active releasing music with her band Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions over the last few years.

New Order/Bernard Sumner's ecstasy comments in Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone published a 40th anniversary feature on the iconic CBS series Dallas. The piece includes a blurb about New Order discovering ecstasy, which the mag nicked from Bernard Sumner's autobiography Chapter and Verse. Check out the blurb below and read the full tribute to Dallas here via Joy Division/New Order.

"How hard did the cast party? New Order's Bernard Sumner gave a hint in his memoir Chapter and Verse, explaining how the band discovered the drug that inspired their 1982 song "Ecstasy." "We'd played a gig in Dallas, gone out to a club afterwards and got talking to the promoters. These were the days when Dallas was massive on the television and they told us that some members of the cast and crew would go to this club 'where they liked to drop an E.'" To wit: New Order had to ask what an "E" was. In other words, the Ewings helped introduce English rock stars to Ecstasy – talk about a major contribution to music history (if a not-entirely-positive one). Before Ibiza, there was Southfork."

Echo & The Bunnymen push back release of orchestral LP + share artwork

Echo & The Bunnymen have pushed back the release of their new album The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon. The fifteen track album includes orchestral reworkings of Echo classics along with a handful of brand new songs, and was originally slated to be released May 18th. Today they shared the cover art for the album and announced the release has been pushed to the fall in order to put some finishing touches on the record, but promise it'll be worth the wait.

Morrissey talks solo LPs, The Smiths + more in new interview

Morrissey recently chatted it up with interviewer John Riggers in a newly published interview over at Morrissey Central. Many of the usual (and controversial) subjects were covered - politics, the monarchy, animal cruelty, the press, Low In High School - but regardless of the topic Morrissey interviews are always a fascinating read. I'll leave other websites to pontificate on Mozzer's political commentary and focus instead on the musical highlights of the interview.

Morrissey talked a bit about The Smiths, revealing "The Smiths were explosive during the Rank tour. Before that, we were all fumbling about - me, especially. My voice wasn’t great. The music was always solid."

He says that he no longer listens to The Smiths, "it was beautiful, but it's gone" but is pleased with his solo catalog, other than the first two albums. Asked to expound on his disenchantment with Viva Hate and Kill Uncle, he admitted "I wasn't ready, I rushed in too quickly. It was my fault."

As for album artwork, he considers the album sleeve for Maladjusted "the worst" and said his favorite is the image on the Greatest Hits album.

Morrissey confirmed he is working on new material and says a new album is "under way," and he'll likely play some dates overseas this summer.

He took issue with Spin over published comments that allegedly accuse him of being a fascist, and implied that he's going to sue:

"It’s unfortunate to take any publication to court, but sometimes you must, and this is one of those times because otherwise the press can succeed in dictating an ugly view, which they fully realize can place you in danger."

Video: Radiohead blow away fans at first live show of 2018

Radiohead returned to the stage last night and performed their first concert of 2018 as part of the SUE Festival in Santiago, Chile. Radiohead's set was brimming with classics and was wholly ON point, proving yet again why they're considered one of the world's best live acts. Thom Yorke was animated throughout and genuinely appeared to be having a blast onstage. They played about an hour and a half, then returned for two more encores which lasted almost another full hour.

Radiohead return to North America this summer and perform at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on July 22nd.

Director Tim Pope talks Cure documentary, The The + more

Tim Pope appeared on Soho Radio today to discuss some of his upcoming projects. During the interview he made some brief comments about The Cure's 40th anniversary documentary which he himself announced on Twitter last December. He was quick to choose his words wisely, acknowledging to host Simone Marie that whatever he says about the project will be making the rounds on social media, etc, and overall seemed a bit exasperated with Cure fans torturing him on Twitter.

Pope reiterated that the film will include previously unseen footage of The Cure with Robert Smith being heavily involved in narrating the film/telling The Cure's story.  Pope said he's hoping to see the Cure footage soon and stated that it is an amazing thing to have access to so much material that hasn't been seen before. He cautioned fans that a documentary of this nature takes a long time to put together, and emphasized several times that fans need to be patient. He wrapped up his comments by revealing the documentary will be made by next year.

Pope also shared a few kind words about Matt Johnson and The The and is excited for their first live shows in 16 years. He went on to mention he's going to film The The's sold out show at London's Royal Albert Hall in June though didn't disclose plans for that footage.

The interview included other entertaining stories about David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Neil Young. Finally, Pope revealed that though he's met and worked with countless number of artists over the year, the one musician he said he'd love to meet is Brian Eno, and stated he's a huge fan, particularly of Eno's ambient music.
