In the early 90s (and at the request of super-fan Trent Reznor), Coil (John Balance, Peter Christopherson) remixed several of NIN's songs for the Nine Inch Nails album Further Down The Spiral, which was released in 1995.
Almost 20 year later fansite Echoing The Sound contacted Danny Hyde (engineer/producer of the sessions) to find out if any outtakes from the sessions existed. Hyde went through his DAT archive and located the original material along with his extensive typewritten notes (listing of samples, sequences, pre-sets, etc), and later recreated remixes of that unreleased material.
The four remixes Hyde completed would go on to be released in 2014 as the four song EP Recoiled. Recoiled was not an official NIN release, though Trent Reznor was aware of the project and never fought its release.
Earlier this month Danny Hyde created a 20 minute video explaining how he went about recreating the remixes from the original studio sessions in the 90s. If you're interested in engineering/producing and/or the technical side of making music, the video is a fascinating window into the creative process.
