'The Public Image Is Rotten' film premiere
The Public Image Is Rotten, new documentary about Public Image Ltd premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st. The film is an intimate look at PiL and features archival footage and tons of candid moments with Lydon and bandmates Martin Atkins, and Jah Wobble, among others in the band's inner circle.
After the Tribeca premiere director Tabbert Fiiller took part in a question/answer session with Variety's Cynthia Littleton. John Lydon showed up to crash the Q & A, and lucky for us a fan was at the event and filmed a chunk of the action. Though the fan-filmed video is a bit shaky at times, the audio is terrific and there's tons of great Lydon moments (as well as awkward ones). Check out the action here on You Tube.
So far plans for a wider screening of The Public Image Is Rotten have not been announced.

Mark Lanegan stirs up "Beehive" video
Mark Lanegan returns with his new album Gargoyle on April 28th. Today the legend shared the video for the album's epic and insanely catchy lead single "Beehive." Check it out down below.
Lanegan's 10th solo album features several guests including Greg Dulli, Josh Homme, and Duke Garwood (all three musicians have collaborated with Lanegan previously). Lanegan also reveals the dark and vibey record came together rather quickly -- about a month -- which he owes to having become a better songwriter:
"I definitely feel like I’m a better songwriting than I was 15 years ago...I don’t know if I’m just kidding myself or what, but it’s definitely easier now to make something that is satisfying to me. Maybe I’m just easier on myself these days, but it’s definitely not as painful a process, and therefore I feel I’m better at it now. But part of the way that I stay interested in making music is by collaborating with other people. When I see things through somebody else’s perspective it’s more exciting than if I’m left to my own devices."

Darkwave/post-punk: The Foreign Resort unleash "She Is Lost"
The Foreign Resort are part of the modern post-punk scene's A-list these days, and for good reason. The Copenhagen trio have been making impassioned dark, chilling, and gloriously gloomy music (ala Joy Division, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Killing Joke) since 2010. During that time they've released a flawless arsenal of critically acclaimed EPs and LPs. They've also impressed extraordinary artists, touring alongside Swervedriver, A Place To Bury Strangers, Cold Cave, DIIV, The KVB, The Raveonettes, and Slowdive just to name a few.
In short, The Foreign Resort are a phenomenal band. Their music takes you on an explosive and spellbinding sonic journey into darkwave, post-punk, electro, goth, and wall-of-sound shoegaze, with entrancing and mystical vocals courtesy of leader Mikkel Jakobsen.
The Foreign Resort are back today with more brilliance. They've released a captivating new single "She Is Lost," a personal song written by Jakobsen. He reveals:
"It was one of the worst summers in my life. I came out strong on the other side, but this song was written partly when things were looking very bad and I was not doing the right things to get to a better place and partly when I had realized it was not just me who was the problem. Hence the title 'She is Lost'."
"She Is Lost" is the first taste from the Foreign Resort's forthcoming full length album, which is expected out later this year (date TBA). The single also coincides with the band's 10-date Canadian tour, which kicks off tomorrow and brings them oh-so-close to the Detroit area April 27th at Phog Lounge in Windsor (go dust off that passport).
Stream "She Is Lost" below and grab the digital single now from Bandcamp, iTunes, or Amazon.
Catch up with The Foreign Resort on the web, Twitter, and Facebook. Their full catalog is available on Bandcamp.

Matt Johnson debuts The The's 7" single "We Can't Stop What's Coming"
The The are releasing a new one-sided 7" single for Record Store Day in the U.K. titled "We Can't Stop What's Coming." The U.K. only release is limited to 2000 copies and will not be released online (at least in the short term). BBC Music 6 host Steve Lamacq interviewed Matt Johnson and debuted the single on his radio program today. The interview and song are available to stream here (interview starts ~ 1:13:45, the song starts ~ 1:21:29).
Items of interest from today's interview:
"We Can't Stop What's Coming" is the song taken from Johnson's Radio Cineola broadcast last May. The single is the live recording Johnson performed on the broadcast, although some elements/instruments were later added. It's an incredibly impressive recording. This was done live -- all in one take -- for the broadcast, with the added pressure of this being Johnson's first live performance in 15 years.
Some time after the Radio Cineola broadcast was over, Johnson got in touch with some former and current members of The The to add some instruments to the recording. One of the musicians on the track is the legendary Johnny Marr, who was a member of The The for a span of time after the Smiths broke up. [Johnson revealed that he was having dinner with Marr one night and played the song for him. Marr and Johnson's brother Andrew, who the song was written for, were fans of one another, so Johnson was glad to include Marr on the recording.]
"We Can't Stop What's Coming" was inspired by and written about Johnson's brother Andrew (Andy Dog, graphic artist for The The's sleeves) who died in January 2016. Johnson reveals he wrote the song while Andrew was dying -- he'd spend time by himself playing music...he'd sit and reflect and play, and he came up with a melody that helped get him through the difficult period. The melody eventually became a full song. Johnson says "the words are about Andrew, for Andrew, the whole thing is dedicated to Andrew." Additionally, the sleeve for the 7" was taken from a drawing found in Andrew's sketchbook.
This is the third time Johnson wrote a song for a close family member that's died -- "Love Is Stronger Than Death" off 1993's Dusk was written for his brother Eugene; "Phantom Walls" (off 2000's Naked Self) was written for his mother.
"We Can't Stop What's Coming" is featured in the new documentary The Inertia Variations, which recently premiered in Copenhagen and will debut later this summer in Edinburgh.
Johnson confirmed what he's said in previous interviews: he's working on several other projects associated with the film, including a book of collectible interviews, poetry, and other music (including a collection of The The covers - other bands covering The The songs). And though Johnson says "We Can't Stop What's Coming" will not be released online in the near future, he is planning to release it as part of his larger project, which he hopes to "come to fruition in the summer or autumn."
For more on Matt Johnson and The Inertia Variations, check out an excellent (long read) interview here.
Finally, in case you haven't seen it yet, Matt Johnson is one of the stars in the video for Marc Almond's new single "A Kind Of Love." Johnson rocks a mean mustache in the video!

Depeche Mode - The Dark Progression
A Depeche Mode documentary exploring four seminal albums - Black Celebration, Music For The Masses, Violator, Songs of Faith & Devotion - and the band's rise to electronic music dominance was created by Chrome Dreams Media in 2009. Depeche Mode - The Dark Progression chronicles the band's trailblazing music and how the darkness of their music struck a chord with fans and helped Depeche Mode become one of the most influential and legendary bands of our time.
The film includes tons of vintage interview/performance footage of Depeche Mode along with commentary from their electronic music peers (and luminaries in their own right) Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby, and Andy McCluskey. This is an essential Depeche Mode film and is highly recommended viewing. Stream below:
FYI: the first 15 minutes is an essential overview of electronic music which perfectly lays the groundwork for the rest of the documentary.

The Vacant Lots release new LP 'Endless Nights'; collaborate with Alan Vega
The Vacant Lots follow up 2016's magnificent Berlin EP with a full length album on April 21st. Endless Nights continues the band's scintillating blend of electro/psychedelic/post-punk, and adds a surprising and fantastic bonus: Alan Vega. As the story goes, the late Suicide mastermind had agreed to write lyrics and sing on a track titled "Suicide Note," but sadly he died suddenly last year before he was able to write/record his collaboration. Vega's wife granted The Vacant Lots permission to go through some of his unreleased archives and select a vocal track for "Suicide Note." The rest, as they say, is history.
Check out the video for "Suicide Note" along with an awesome fan-created video for "Night Nurse" below (official stream for "Night Nurse" is here).
Pre-order Endless Nights from Metropolis Records.

Iggy Pop debuted a new song today titled "Asshole Blues." The raw and stripped down track serves as the first single from a new flexi-disc series from Jacuzzi Boys' indie label Mag Mag.
Iggy told Rolling Stone that the single is "full of negative energy" and cautions fans to "listen at your own risk."
Meanwhile Jacuzzi Boys explained that the flexi series will "serve as a place where artists can do as they please...No rules. We're just trying to turn folks on to stuff we find interesting."

Morrissey cancels San Antonio show
As reported yesterday, Morrissey's ailing voice caused him to cut Monday night's show in Tuscon short. The tour was scheduled to resume tonight in San Antonio, however it's a shock to no one that tonight's show has been axed. Here's the statement issued by the venue Tobin Center:
"Following health concerns stemming from Morrissey's appearance in Tucson, it is with great sadness that tonight's sold out engagement in San Antonio at the Tobin Center is cancelled to allow him to fully recuperate. Your purchase will be refunded to the original transaction credit card, or if purchased by cash or check a check will be mailed to the name and address on the original transaction."
There are only two more shows left on the tour -- Houston and Dallas -- and so far nothing official has been announced, but we've all been down this road before, so...
Morrissey walked off during the end of "Every Day Is Like Sunday." Watch the drama unfold via NME.

Still Ill: Morrissey cuts Tucson show short
Morrissey has been on tour in North America, and apparently things didn't go so well, at least last night in Tucson. Mozzer played an abbreviated set -- six songs -- then cut his show short. According to fans, Morrissey didn't address the crowd, just walked off stage. Later, his band came on stage and broke the bad news to fans that the show was over due to Moz's ailing voice. Morrissey is scheduled to be back on the road tomorrow. So far, there's no word on the status of the rest of the tour.

Robyn Hitchcock shares new single/video
Robyn Hitchcock returns with his new self-titled solo album on April 21st. Today he shared the video for "Raymond And The Wires" -- a track written as a homage to his dad, writer/cartoonist Raymond Hitchcock. The video includes footage of Hitchcock's father that was captured over the years. Hitchcock revealed:
"This video is a collage of years and Hitchcocks, assembled by Jeremy Dylan from archive trolleybus footage; from my family's home movies; and from film he shot of me recently...I'm singing the song on a tram in Melbourne, Australia about a trolleybus ride I took with my late father Raymond in Reading, England in 1964."
"Raymond liked a nice tune. This would probably have embarrassed him, given what a distant English family we were. But his spirit loves acknowledgement, I like to think: and I'm sure he lives through me as fully as any ghost. On ya, dad!"
Watch the video below and read an excellent Robyn Hitchcock interview here.

Classic Alternative - Episode 1: Smashing The Paradigm
It is Sunday, which means it's time to rock it old school. This week I'm excited to announce I have two separate playlists for you to stream and enjoy:
1. I have concocted and recorded a two-hour mix of classic alternative music. I hesitate to call it a podcast, but it's similar to Time Warp in that you'll hear music along with commentary, music news, etc. It's somewhat of a work in progress, and it will sound bigger and better in the weeks to come, but I decided to post an episode now because I wanted to keep your heart (and ears) full of great music. You can stream it down below or here.
2. As promised previously, I have a new playlist for you. Classic Alternative Playlist #2 is the second in the Spotify playlist series and features four hours of music. Stream below or on Spotify. If you missed last week's playlist, stream it here.
FYI: the Spotify playlist is an entirely different set of songs than the two-hour show mix, so that means you've got SIX unique hours of music in all!
Thank you so much for listening and caring. Keep the music alive!
