Johnny Marr drops Smiths reunion bombshell
Johnny Marr dropped a bombshell in his about-to-be-released biography Set The Boy Free -- the Smiths came so very close to reuniting in 2008. In a excerpt of the book, published in the Guardian, Marr revealed that he met up with Morrissey at a pub in 2008 (he had been in contact with him earlier in the year after reaching an agreement to remaster the Smiths' catalog). When they met up the drinks were flowing, as were the memories, and the two eventually discussed reuniting and how a potential reunion could work:
"Suddenly we were talking about the possibility of the band re-forming, and in that moment it seemed that with the right intention it could actually be done and might even be great.
"For four days it was a very real prospect...Morrissey and I continued our dialogue and planned to meet up again. I went to Mexico with the Cribs, and then suddenly there was radio silence. Our communication ended, and things went back to how they were and how I expect they always will be."
Just imagine being at the pub witnessing Morrissey and Marr rekindling their friendship! Lucky for them, it was 2008 -- a time where smart phones were just getting introduced and camera phones took mostly worthless pictures -- so they were able to keep it on the down low. Had their pub meetup occurred a few years later, there would undoubtedly be photographic and video evidence.
Though there was no further talk of reuniting, Marr told the Guardian he was in contact with Morrissey again in 2010 after he saw a picture of a young protester wearing a Smiths shirt -- the photo captured the protester confronting police in front of the House of Parliament, which Marr found quite moving. He texted the photo to Morrissey and the two ended up sharing a few texts but that was it:
"...although I felt I’d created a moment of friendship, an air of disaffection and distrust remained between us. It was a shame."

Morrissey adds new U.S. dates including Detroit area stop
Morrissey kicks off a new leg of his U.S. tour later this week. Today he announced three more dates including Chicago, Cleveland, and a Detroit area stop November 23rd at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.
Hang on just a moment though, because there's a little drama with the Detroit area show (isn't there always?). The issue isn't that he's playing the Royal Oak Music Theatre -- apparently he's gotten over his 2011 beef with security.
No, the problem here is Morrissey already has a November 23rd date scheduled in El Paso at the Abraham Chavez Theatre that is currently on sale! Looking at the tour itinerary it appears the El Paso show is either getting moved or it will be axed altogether.
Updates on the fluid El Paso/Royal Oak Mozgate situation will be posted once available. The full tour itinerary, including the new dates, is posted below.
UPDATE (10/24 @ 4:07PM): Morrissey's November 23rd show in El Paso has been canceled. On sale info for the Detroit show will be announced shortly.
UPDATE (10/25 @ 11:15) Tickets for the November 23rd show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre go on sale Friday at 10am. The pre-sale kicks off October 26th at noon.

Icehouse: Business In The Front, Party In The Back
Today's episode of business in the front, party in the back comes courtesy of Icehouse and their 1987 video for "Electric Blue." It'd be hard to argue that anyone had a bigger, better mullet than Iva Davies. So massive. But so were the jams. Good times.
Get another glimpse of Davies and his wild hair in the video for "Crazy," also filmed in 1987.

R.E.M.'s Mike Mills takes concerto on tour
R.E.M. bassist and songwriter Mike Mills composed his first classical work Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra. Mills collaborated with longtime friend and critically acclaimed violinist Robert McDuffie on the six movement composition, which was released earlier this month through Orange Mountain Music. The orchestral rock & roll fusion has been described by Rolling Stone as "cinematic but never schmaltzy, rock-inflected but never corny, classical but never stuffy." Purchase Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra from Amazon. Stream the third movement of the concerto "Sunny Side Up" and read more about the project here.
In support of the album, Mills and McDuffie hit the road this week with chamber orchestra Fifth House Ensemble for a tour of the U.S. and will play Music Hall in Detroit on November 6th. Tickets for the event are available here.

The album is more accessible than the band's previous output, take for instance "I'm Still Believing," which is super catchy, barely-three-minute track that would easily fit on alt radio if given a chance. This accessibility shouldn't be offputting to old TOY fans -- there's tons and tons of blissful psychedelic, shoegaze, dreampop, and experimental moments to enjoy, particularly the epic album closer "Cinema." Stream The Radio Dept.'s new LP 'Running Out Of Love' in full
The Radio Dept. return with their first new album since 2010's Clinging To A Scheme on October 21st. The highly anticipated album Running Out Of Love features the band's signature dreampoppy, danceable hooks and politically charged lyrics. The lyrics were inspired by their (now resolved) legal battle with their record label, as well as their increasing disenchantment with Swedish politics. As they've revealed in a previous statement, Running Out Of Love was "created in a sense of deep frustration over the reactionary currents which characterize our time," but yet the album manages to be quite uplifting and marvelous.
Today The Radio Dept premiered Running Out Of Love in full ahead of its release -- stream all ten tracks in full over at NPR.

Depeche Mode announce new LP 'Spirit' & Global Spirit tour
Depeche Mode held their press conference in Milan, Italy today to announce details for their forthcoming studio album. The new album, Spirit, will be released "early next spring" (date tba), and was recorded in Santa Barbara and New York with producer James Ford. Dave Gahan told the audience that Ford came in fresh and took the band's new material to the next level. Though the album isn't complete, Gahan called the new material "incredible sounding" "exciting" and revealed the band is very proud of the record. After the album announcement, Depeche Mode played a short video with a preview of some of their new sounds.
After the album preview Depeche Mode announced details for their Global Spirit world tour. Long time collaborator Anton Corbijn will be creating visuals for the tour (he'll also be creating Spirit album artwork), but the band didn't discuss the tour theme as the thematic endeavor is still in the early stages. The band will also teaming up with Charity: Water on tour to raise awareness and funds to help the organization bring clean, safe, drinking water to people worldwide.
The Global Spirit tour kicks off May 5th in Sweden and plays Europe through the end of July. North American dates (and likely South American dates) have not yet been announced but according to Gahan "those dates will be eventually announced, we're still working on it."
Finally Depeche Mode took questions from the press and fans -- they were asked if rock music is dead ("good music is everywhere, you have to look for it") what the record sounds like ("sexy"), and if world events shaped the album ("it did, but we don't want to go into that, the record isn't finished yet").
One of the more awkward moments was when someone asked a question about reunions and ended by asking if it's possible for Alan Wilder, who left the band in 1995, will be coming back. The band members were mostly able to laugh it off, then gushed about current touring band members Christian Eigner and Peter Gordeno. Another moment of awkwardness: a German television journalist commented on how Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher look "marvelous and ageless" but wondered if Gahan, who was sporting awesome gold metallic boots, still has what it takes to swing his hips and move around on stage! Gahan had a good laugh and responded: "No, I'm still in good form, I'm good to go."

Post-rock/experimental from Russia: 417.3
Russia's 417.3 has been creating sprawling post-rock/prog-alternative music since 2006. Interestingly, all of the band's songs are instrumental, and the song and album titles are solely made up of numerals and symbols (perhaps describing 417.3 as math rock wouldn't be entirely wrong). After almost four years, 417.3 are back with an intriguing new record titled 34. The band's third full length record features five compositions that triumphantly take the listener on an atmospheric journey full of moods, emotions, and introspection. If you enjoy immense and labyrinthine instrumentals, this is truly a band and album worth delving into.

Soft Kill return with 'Choke' LP; stream new single ft Mark Burgess
Portland's dark/post-punk act Soft Kill formed in 2010 and have released three outstanding albums to date. On November 4th, they'll continue their string of awesomeness with their highly anticipated fourth album Choke. Not only does the album include eight songs about depression and death (® Profound Records), but there's also a song "On The Inside" featuring the legendary Mark Burgess of the Chameleons/Chameleons Vox. Soft Kill recently explained to Cvlt Nation how the awesome collaboration with Burgess came about:
"Chameleons are one of our biggest influences, and touring with them was one of the best experiences. To connect with one of our favorite bands was truly unreal. We reached out to Mark to see if he would be interested in collaborating. He was. The result was absolutely incredible and organic; his part on the album is otherworldly. We could not be more in awe of him and his contribution."
"On The Inside" is SO GOOD and it's available to stream below:

Depeche Mode announce press conference
Depeche Mode announced they're holding a press conference October 11th in Milan, Italy. Depeche Mode last held a press conference in Paris in 2012 -- during that event they revealed details about their 13th album Delta Machine, plus they debuted a new song and announced dates for a world tour. It's no secret the band has been working on a new studio album, so it seems highly likely they'll announce at least some details regarding the album. Regardless, it should be a compelling event, so mark your calendar and watch October 11th at 1pm CET. You can bide your time viewing the countdown clock on the official Depeche Mode website.
Please join us on our Facebook page or https://t.co/rJtl0RniZq on October 11 at 1pm CET for a special announcement, live from Milan, Italy.— Depeche Mode (@depechemode) September 30, 2016

Iggy Pop speaking event in Detroit + nude exhibit opens in Brooklyn
The Grammy Foundation and Iron Mountain present Living Histories Live: A Conversation With Iggy Pop & Don Was. The event takes place Sunday, October 23rd -- just days before the Detroit premiere of Gimme Danger -- at the Majestic Theater in Detroit. During this exclusive event the Detroit legends will discussing their exceptional life stories with Grammy/Music Cares VP Scott Goldman. Purchase tickets and learn more about the event here.
Meanwhile a nude Iggy Pop art exhibit opens at the Brooklyn Museum on November 4th. The exhibit features naked sketches of Iggy that were created in the spring when Iggy bared all and posed for a group of students at a life drawing art class at New York Academy of Art. British artist Jeremy Deller came up with the idea for Iggy Pop Art Class and explained his concept in the exhibit's press release:
"Iggy Pop has one of the most recognisable bodies in popular culture. A body that is key to an understanding of rock music, and that has been paraded, celebrated, and scrutinised through the years in a way that is unusual for a man. It is also fair to say that it has witnessed a lot. It was for these reasons that I wanted him to sit for a life class."
Iggy Pop Art Class opens November 4th and runs through March 26th. If you're interested in a sneak peek -- view samples from the exhibit here.
Finally, as previously reported the Stooges' documentary Gimme Danger premieres in Detroit on October 28th at the DIA. More details are posted here.
