The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead' turns 30
The Smiths' seminal album the Queen Is Dead was released on this day in 1986. Though the album wasn't a commercial success in the U.S., it is highly regarded by the music industry (and people with taste) as one of the best and most important albums of all time.
According to Johnny Marr, the legendary title track on the album was influenced by two bands that have also made an indelible mark on music history -- The Stooges and Velvet Underground. He told NME:
"I had an idea to do a song that had the aggression of the Detroit garage bands, ‘cos I’m such a Stooges fan. And it’s influenced by the Velvets too- it’s The Smiths does The Stooges does The Velvet Underground. ‘VU’ [compilation of Velvet Underground outtakes, released in 1985] had just been released, so there’s a little nod to ‘I Can’t Stand It’ in there. We chopped a couple of minutes off the song in the end. The long version felt more like us running a marathon, then doing a lap of honour!"

Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie on the mend
On June 2nd, Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie fell off stage (reportedly 7 feet) while performing at a festival in Switzerland. Gillespie was rushed to the hospital leaving fans in shock and in fear of the worst. After a long week of no info or updates, today Primal Scream posted some news about Gillespie. According to the band, Gillespie is on the mend, however he'll require at least eight weeks to recuperate, thus Primal Scream's live dates through the end of July have been canceled. The Stone Roses make glorious live return
At long last the Stone Roses returned to the stage tonight to play the first of two "secret" warmup shows in England. Tonight's show was at the intimate Halifax Victoria Theater (capacity ~ 1500), and from all accounts the show was nothing less than magical. The band kicked things off with the anthemic "I Wanna Be Adored," then ripped though a glorious set of classics as well as their new single "All For One." The setlist was solid gold but didn't include too many surprises other than the return of "Begging You," which has been absent from the band's live sets since 1996. And though Reni allegedly revealed that more "beautiful" Stone Roses music is coming soon, apart from "All For One" the Roses didn't debut any new material.
Update: Read the NME's review here; another review is Even The Stars is posted here.
View the official setlist and fan filmed pictures and video below.

Captivating new photo book 'The Smiths'
A captivating new photo book about The Smiths will be released on June 14th. The photos were captured by Nalinee Darmrong in 1985 and 1986 while traveling with the Smiths as they toured America promoting Meat Is Murder and The Queen Is Dead. Darmrong wasn't a professional photographer at the time -- she was only 17 years old and had just graduated high school, yet she was given unprecedented access to the band and captured many intimate and breathtaking photos. The hardcover book also includes Darmrong's commentary and story behind the shots, as well as pictures of set lists, memorabilia, promo items, fan gifts, and more. Pre-order The Smiths here.
A short feature on The Smiths, including a collection of photos and commentary from the book is available to view here.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds release 'Skeleton Tree' + film in September
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds confirmed a new album will be released in September. Rumors of the release circulated last week, however today Cave officially confirmed the news and announced further details. The band's 16th studio album, Skeleton Tree, is set for a September 9th release; a companion film, One More Time With Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik screens globally the night before the release. The film includes material from Skeleton Tree, however according to Cave's website the film is somewhat of a performance/documentary hybrid:
"Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white and colour, in both 3D and 2D."
One More Time With Feeling screens one night only at participating theaters worldwide on September 8th. The Detroit area screening takes place at Cinema Detroit and ticket info should be available shortly. View the full list of screenings here.
Pre-order Skeleton Tree on CD, vinyl, and as a digital download here.

The Charlatans unveil glorious London Underground map
Back in 2012, the Charlatans unveiled a unique promotional item -- the band appropriated the Periodic Table of the Elements replacing elements with song titles. Remember this?
Today the Charlatans unveiled their newest promotional creation -- a map of the London Underground, which replaces tube station destinations with over 150 song and album titles from their discography. The map was created as a tribute to Harry Beck, designer of the original London Underground map. Beck would have turned 114 years old on June 4th.
The map has pretty sweet packaging as well -- take a look below:
And here's video of how it opens up:
What a thing. Can't stop opening it. #TuneMap @thecharlatans @Tim_Burgess pic.twitter.com/2iRsgQprmC— Sarah Walters (@SarahCityLife) June 1, 2016
The Charlatans will be giving away copies of the limited edition map at their upcoming shows and through other promotional events/scavenger hunts in the U.K. So far there isn't an option to purchase on the web, however those interested in obtaining a copy should follow the band on social media in the event that they decide to do an online giveaway, etc. Official site. Twitter. Facebook.
FYI: A Smiths version of The London Underground map, adapted by designer Aiden Smith, made the rounds in 2013.
The Charlatans released their last album, the stellar Modern Nature, in 2015. If you missed out on this release, best take a listen.

Band Of Horses enlist Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis for new single
Band Of Horses is about to release a new album Why Are You Ok on June 10th. The first single from the album features the dulcet tones of the almighty J Mascis. It doesn't come close to the glory of BOH's epic anthem "The Funeral," but it's a pretty cool song nonetheless. Stream "In A Drawer" featuring J Mascis below and catch up with Band Of Horses here.
