New Order announce partnership with Mute; wins GQ award

New Order signed a recording contract with Mute records (over the years, roster has included Depeche Mode, Erasure, Can, Cabaret Voltaire, and Nick Cave). The band announced the news today via social media while Mute confirmed the signing in an official press statement. New Order has been working on new material over the last year and debuted two new songs ("Singularity" and "Plastic") at live shows in 2014. Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris both stated in previous interviews that New Order is trying to decide whether to release new music in the form of a full length album or a series of EPs. Today's announcement skirts around which type of release they've decided on, but whatever it is, Mute will be the label to release it.

Press statement from Mute founder Daniel Miller:

"This is an exciting new chapter for both Mute and New Order and I feel privileged to be working with artists with such a long, creative and successful history. When the possibility of us working together first came up, I was invited to hear some of the new material and immediately had no doubts whatsoever that Mute would be the right home for New Order. We’ve already had a number of creative conversations, and I am looking towards an exciting future."

In more random New Order news, it turns out the band won the Inspiration award at GQ's Men of the Year awards. According to the GQ UK website, Bernard Sumner accepted the award and stated:

"Inspiration means we inspire other bands to make money. But we still get the awards so thank you very much."

Just a reminder that Bernard Sumner releases his memoir Chapter & Verse: New Order, Joy Division, and Me on September 18th in the U.K. Pre-order from Random House or Amazon UK. A North American release has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile ex-New Order bassist Peter Hook returns to North America to perform classic New Order albums Low Life & Brotherhood in concert. Tickets for this not-to-be-missed-tour are on sale now including the Detroit area stop November 13th at the Magic Bag.
