J Mascis released his solo album Tied To A Star in August and kicked off his North American tour in support of the album this week. During the Philadelphia stop, Mascis performed his cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You." Copies of his 2013 studio recording of the cover are long gone (the limited edition picture disc was released in conjunction with Dinosaur Jr's purple shoe last year), so it's at least nice that Mascis is performing the cover in concert. Check out "Fade Into You" below via Bulbs of Passion.

After a week of teasing fans with pictures on social media, Thom Yorke officially released his blippy new solo album Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. Yorke released the album using a new version of Bit Torrent as an experiment:

"The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files. The files can be anything, but in this case is an 'album'. It's an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around.

If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work. Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves. Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers.

If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.

The torrent mechanism does not require any server uploading or hosting costs or 'cloud' malarkey. It's a self-contained embeddable shop front. The network not only carries the traffic, it also hosts the file. The file is in the network."

Purchase Tomorrow's Modern Boxes as a Bit Torrent bundle here. A deluxe vinyl version of the album pressed on 180 gram white vinyl is also available to order here. The vinyl is pricey (50 dollars U.S.), but comes with a download code (mp3/flac/wav) and is a thing of beauty:

"A record born of silver darkness, pressed onto heavyweight 180g white vinyl completed with undersize 75mm centre labels, housed within heavy white board inner and outer sleeves. These are printed with a metallic silver laminate then multi-tone black and a striking neon green; the whole is enclosed in a bespoke anti-static shield bag - a metallised laminated material usually used by the electronics industry for protecting components from electrostatic interference. The bag is printed with neon green on both sides, and has a resealable grip closure."

Stream the album's first track "a brain in a bottle" plus grab a free download of the song and video here (click link then scroll down the page to the "free" section).

R.E.M. and MTV have partnered to release a six-DVD set titled REMTV on November 24th.  The set compiles R.E.M.'s performances from MTV & VH1 spanning 1983 through 2008 -- MTV Unplugged sessions, VH1 Storytellers, VMA appearances, plus R.E.M.'s 2007 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction -- along with rare live performances which aired on MTV Europe (taped at Viacom sponsored European festivals such as Rock Am Ring and Oxegen).  Additionally, the collection includes new documentary chronicling R.E.M. and MTV's history directed by Alexander Young.

Bertis Downs, R.E.M.'s longtime manager on REMTV

"It occurred to us that there's all this footage of some of the band's absolute career highlights sitting in some MTV vaults in London and New York-- and thanks to a lot of effort and digging and arranging, this is our chance to share that music with various generations of R.E.M. fans in a pretty unique release."

Viacom Music's Bill Flanagan:

"I don't think anyone realized just how much terrific R.E.M. footage we were sitting on. To gather the best of it in one collection is pretty overwhelming. R.E.M. started great, stayed great and ended great – here's the evidence."

Those who pre-order REMTV through R.E.M.'s store receive a bonus instant download code for R.E.M.'s 2003 MTV Sonic Show in Milan, Italy (mono recording, not included in REMTV set). Take a look at the tracklisting and pre-order REMTV here. Also be sure to check out a vintage clip of MTV's Nina Blackwood interviewing Peter Buck & Mike Mills below.

Jack White was interviewed recently by Dan Rather for the show The Big Interview. In the episode, which airs tomorrow night, White discussed his difficult decision to leave Detroit.

He told Rather, "it always felt like my home. Detroit, I always imagined I was going to be there my whole life. But the Rust Belt area...those are really cynical towns. When you’re in that kind of cynical environment, it’s hard for people to understand how to relate, and it was definitely hard for me to understand how to relate back to everybody, because I didn’t really know what else I could do for them."

Watch a short clip from the interview below and watch the episode with White tomorrow (September 16th) at 8PM on AXS TV. As you'll see in the second interview clip below, Rather reveals that came away from the interview thinking White may be one of the most interesting people he's ever met.

An Oasis fan site is reporting that Noel Gallagher's new album is due out in March 2015. The report also suggests the album will be preceded by two singles, the first of which will be out before year's end.

Please note that this news has not been confirmed elsewhere, however it does seem likely that Gallagher's new record will be out sometime next year. Back in February, his associate Mark Coyle (who co-produced Definitely Maybe) told NME that Gallagher had written between 50 to 60 songs for the new record:

"It's pouring out of him and he’s currently whittling it all down into an album. The new record will be seismic. It's so explosive that, on the day it comes out, Virgin Trains won’t be able to cope with all the people trying to flee the chaos."

"Noel's new album is fucking great...That boy is from a different planet, and even the fans won't believe how utterly amazing it is."

Meanwhile (What's the Story) Morning Glory will be reissued September 30th as part of the Chasing the Sun: Oasis in the 90s series. Stream a few bonus tracks from the reissue below:

[Post updated after Young's death confirmed]

Primal Scream guitarist Robert "Throb" Young has died at the age of 49.  According to reports police discovered Young's body in his flat in Sussex, England on September 9th and are not considering his death suspicious.

Primal Scream issued the following statement:

"We have lost our comrade and brother Robert Young.
A beautiful and deeply soulful man.
He was an irreplaceable talent, much admired amongst his peers,
In the words of Johnny Marr "Throb with a gold top Les Paul -unbeatable"

He was a true rock and roller. He walked the walk.
He had "Heart & Soul" tattooed on his arm and I'm sure on his heart too.
He once said to me "When we go onstage it's a war between us and the audience"
He never let go of that attitude.

Our love and thoughts are with his sons Brandon and Miles and their mother Jane, his wife Rachel, and his immediate family."

Many of Young's musical friends and colleagues such as Bobby Gillespie, Liam Gallagher, Paul (Bonehead) Arthurs, Tim Burgess, and Andy Bell have offered their condolences, some of which can be read below.  Creation Records founder Alan McGee shared his thoughts and memories about Young here.

A few weeks ago Morrissey announced he had curated a new Ramones greatest hits collection which is expected to be released later this year. Though Morrissey once called the legendary band "rubbish" in his famous 1976 letter to Melody Maker, Moz recently explained to Vegan Logic that it only took a few days before he came to understand the brilliance of the Ramones:

"I thought they were terrible on the Monday that I bought their first album, and by Tuesday I was sneaking back to re-listen, and by Wednesday I was playing the LP at midnight, and by Thursday I was shocked at their magnificence. It’s incredible how the Ramones are now so hugely popular. If they were still alive they’d be the biggest band on the planet, yet they died thinking nobody loved them."

In the same interview Morrissey also briefly discussed where it all started to go wrong with Harvest records -- they didn't like his concept for the "Istanbul" video:

"It was based on the opening scenes of “West Side Story” with the band and I actually dancing through the streets. Harvest just wouldn’t do it. It was the first snap in our relationship, mainly because they didn’t have any alternative ideas. I don’t mind objections if someone has a better idea. Ultimately the head of Harvest DID have an idea … which was “let’s get rid of Morrissey”… unfathomably silly."

Read the full interview with Morrissey over at Vegan Logic.

Meanwhile Morrissey posted a short comment about the death of Joan Rivers on True To You:

"Lately, death is insatiable. Thank God black goes with everything. When Kirk Douglas dies ... somebody, somewhere ... switch out the lights."

The Replacements have something special planned for Tuesday, September 9th -- which will most likely be a performance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Today the Mats posted a short video titled "The Replacements return to 30 Rock" featuring footage from their legendary/drunken/sweary January 18th, 1986 performance on Saturday Night Live, and ends promoting "September 9th, 2014" with Jimmy Fallon's voice audible in the background. The Tonight Show is taped at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, aka 30 Rock, which explains the title of the video. Take a look at the clip below and tune in, or at least set the DVR Tuesday night!

Legendary comedian Joan Rivers died today at the age of 81 years old. R.I.P.

Watch vintage video of Husker Du's appearance on Rivers' program back in 1987. The band performed two songs "Could You Be The One?" and "She's A Woman (And Now I'm A Man)" and was interviewed by Rivers on the episode that aired April 27th, 1987.

FYI: Bob Mould, who is currently on tour in North America reportedly dedicated "Could You Be The One" to Joan Rivers during his August 31st show in Minneapolis.

Yesterday Bernard Sumner from New Order sat down for an interview with music mag Q which took place only a few hours after the band announced its new label deal with Mute, and just a few hours before being honored with the Inspiration award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London.  During the interview Sumner shed a little more insight into the label deal, New Order's forthcoming album, and writing his memoir Chapter & Verse.  Read a few highlights from the interview, plus stream the full interview below, courtesy of Q.

Sumner on signing with Mute:

"We've known Daniel Miller for a long time, off and on...we felt that Mute had similar intentions to Factory Records so it felt like a natural home for us. And with the band having new personnel, a different bass player, and New Order having a new lease on life so to speak...we just felt like it was time for change with the record label as well."

On the new album:

"We've got 8 tracks demoed with vocals, so but they need recording properly with proper drums. We need to do quite a bit of work on them, but we've got songs, that's the hardest bit, until you've got that you can't go anywhere with it...so we've got 8 and we reckon we need another three. We've been working on three songs with Tom Rowlands from the Chemical Brothers and they've turned out very well we've been playing one of those tracks live...it's called "Singularity."  We're using electronic instruments...it's a synth record...but with verses and choruses."

On his autobiography Chapter & Verse, (New Order, Joy Division, and Me) which will be released in the U.K. later this month:

"It was hard work, it was like doing an album, very intense, because it's factual, you have to put a lot of effort into making sure you get facts right that you give an honest rendition of what happened. I'm pleased with the results."

New Order signed a recording contract with Mute records (over the years, roster has included Depeche Mode, Erasure, Can, Cabaret Voltaire, and Nick Cave). The band announced the news today via social media while Mute confirmed the signing in an official press statement. New Order has been working on new material over the last year and debuted two new songs ("Singularity" and "Plastic") at live shows in 2014. Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris both stated in previous interviews that New Order is trying to decide whether to release new music in the form of a full length album or a series of EPs. Today's announcement skirts around which type of release they've decided on, but whatever it is, Mute will be the label to release it.

Press statement from Mute founder Daniel Miller:

"This is an exciting new chapter for both Mute and New Order and I feel privileged to be working with artists with such a long, creative and successful history. When the possibility of us working together first came up, I was invited to hear some of the new material and immediately had no doubts whatsoever that Mute would be the right home for New Order. We’ve already had a number of creative conversations, and I am looking towards an exciting future."

In more random New Order news, it turns out the band won the Inspiration award at GQ's Men of the Year awards. According to the GQ UK website, Bernard Sumner accepted the award and stated:

"Inspiration means we inspire other bands to make money. But we still get the awards so thank you very much."

Read more about the Inspiration award and take a look at a picture of New Order snapped after the ceremony here.

Just a reminder that Bernard Sumner releases his memoir Chapter & Verse: New Order, Joy Division, and Me on September 18th in the U.K. Pre-order from Random House or Amazon UK. A North American release has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile ex-New Order bassist Peter Hook returns to North America to perform classic New Order albums Low Life & Brotherhood in concert. Tickets for this not-to-be-missed-tour are on sale now including the Detroit area stop November 13th at the Magic Bag.
