Ought is a four-piece band from Montreal (via the U.S. and Australia) which came together around the time of Quebec's student strike in 2012. The band released its debut album More Than Any Other Day last month much to the delight of post-punk fans, especially fans of early Talking Heads. The record has a modern spin on post-punk, and much like Protomartyr, the band has a darkish sense of humor which adds to its allure. Stream a few individual tracks from More Than Any Other Day, but you ought to delve right into the entire record below. Order it now from iTunes or Amazon.

Unfortunately, the series hasn't (yet) been picked up in North America, but the first episode is available to view below thanks to You Tube. Three other episodes are also on You Tube, however they include Spanish overdubs.

My Bloody Valentine set to record EP
My Bloody Valentine returns to the recording studio in the fall. NME caught up with Kevin Shields in London last night and and confirmed he's working on some new songs for an EP, and the plan is to record in October or November. No word on when My Bloody Valentine will release their new material. Read the short update here.
My Bloody Valentine broke the internet in February 2013 when they surprise-released their album m b v. Kind of fun to find out that the legendary Bob Mould is a super fan and was right there with the rest of us trying to download the album on that fateful Saturday evening. Mould told the Quietus:
"You should have seen me on the Saturday when the new one [mbv] came out. I was sitting there pressing refresh, refresh, trying to get the fucking thing - only earlier that day they let everyone know and they were in Korea getting ready to do rehearsals for something."

The results are pretty amazing -- the vocals stay pretty true to Hope Sandoval's smooth and dreamy style, but the music is very bouncy and upbeat, and somehow the pairing works really, really, well. Video: David J performs "No New Tale To Tell" at house party
Earlier this year David J (David J Haskins) launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his new album An Eclipse of Ships. One of the campaign rewards was a private David J house party gig followed by a meet and greet--a reward which was snapped up by fan Peter Jones in Springfield, Utah who paid four thousand dollars for the exclusive event. On May 23rd, Haskins and his band set up shop for Jones and his friends, and performed an hourlong set. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that David J enjoyed doing the gig and would like to do more in the future:
"It is so refreshing to play in an intimate setting for the true music fans, cutting out the often-seedy middleman. In fact, I want to play a lot more of these gigs in the future. It really feels like the right way to go."
David J will be back on the road in September to perform intimate house party gigs in 11 different cities. Fans interested in hosting a house party on one of the stops on the tour can host a ticketed show or pay a flat fee and invite guests. Info on how to get involved is posted here.

Morrissey axes remainder of U.S. tour
It's official: Morrissey canceled the remainder of his North American tour due to medical issues. The official statement was posted on Facebook earlier this evening:
"It is with great sadness that the remainder of the US Tour has been cancelled. The respiratory infection Morrissey contracted in Miami has worsened, and in the interest of making a full recovery, all further touring plans have been halted. Morrissey thanks his fans for their compassion, understanding, and well-wishes during this difficult period as he recuperates."
Another, more detailed, statement was posted on True To You. The statement calls out opening act Kristeen Young for allegedly spreading the respiratory virus that was too much for the crew and Morrissey to overcome:
"Morrissey announces the close down of the present U.S. tour with "unimaginable sorrow". On Saturday, June 7th, following the show at Boston Opera House, Morrissey collapsed and was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital where doctors treated Morrissey for "acute fever". Difficulties had arisen on May 31st following Kristeen Young's opening set at the Miami Knight Concert Hall, after which Kristeen confessed to "a horrendous cold", the symptoms of which were passed on to Morrissey resulting in the cancellation of the next show in Atlanta.
For the good of all, Kristeen was asked to step down from the immediate upcoming shows, but instead she decided to leave the tour entirely. Morrissey and the band wish her well and hope she is now in good health.
Morrissey received medical attention in Miami, and once again in Boston, but it was not enough to shake off the virus, the recovery time for which is too lengthy to meet the final 9 shows of the tour."
Kristeen Young, by the way, denies the claim of "confessing to a cold" and posted her own statement on the matter on her Facebook. The post is unavailable at the moment, however several sites, including Pitchfork, are reporting the statement as follows:
"Ok. Regarding the recent True-to-you statement from Morrissey: I did not "confess to a horrendous cold". On Monday, June 2nd, I had an allergy attack that was over within 16 hours. I went to a doctor (on Monday, June 2nd), an allergy specialist, who gave me drugs for allergies...and they worked. I explained this (early on Tuesday, June 3rd) and offered this doctor's phone number to Morrissey personally, via email, and the tour manager, Donnie Knutson (for proof....since they seemed to doubt me). But, they NEVER followed up with me or said doctor. Also....it is incorrect that I "decided to leave the tour completely". I was asked to leave. Was called (in the presence of my band as witnesses) by Morrissey's booking agent, Dave Tamaroff, and told that there would be a new support band in Boston. I am very sorry that Morrissey is not feeling well. But I will not tolerate these lies....particularly about my health. This is really too much and bizarre."
Regardless of which story you believe, the tour has been canceled and refunds are available at point of purchase.

Elephant Stone returns with new LP 'The Three Poisons'
Hot on the heels of its brilliant 2013 self-titled album, Montreal's Elephant Stone is set to return with a brand new album in August.
[For those not familiar with Elephant Stone, the band creates a splendid mix of indie-pop laced with psychedelica (Elephant Stone's founding member Rishi Dhir is an accomplished sitar player and has recorded and toured with Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Angels, the Horrors, and others in the psychedelic music scene).]
Elephant Stone announced their fourth full length album, The Three Poisons, will be released on August 26th and they've shared the first taste of the record which doubles as (sort of) the album's title track. Stream "Three Poisons" below and pre-order the album here.
If you dig psych music do yourself a favor and listen to Elephant Stone's previously released material. All three albums are available to stream for free on the band's official website. Also, check out a few other highlights below:
Earlier this year their cover of "L.A. Woman" was included on A Psych Tribute To The Doors.

Michael Stipe shares song he created for 'The Cold Lands'
Today Michael Stipe premiered his first new material since the disbandment of R.E.M. Stipe collaborated with Andy LeMaster on the instrumental track, "The Coldlands," which was written for and inspired by the new Tom Gilroy film of the same name (film available on demand here).
Stipe discussed the project in an interview with Salon and revealed that because this is the first music he's released since R.E.M., he felt some added pressure, but because he knew he wouldn't be singing it made things easier:
"This is, in fact, the first thing that I’ve done musically since R.E.M disbanded. So, of course, I wanted it to be for something that meant a lot to me. That was important.
But this was more like an oral painting in a way because I didn’t have to use my voice. I didn’t have the pressure of writing a lyric or expressing a feeling or emotion through my voice. I could do it through instruments...If there was a singer, it wouldn’t have been me. I would have found someone. That’s not just being ornery. It’s just that I don’t want to do it right now."
Stipe also isn't sure when he'll create more music, but re-affirmed that music is still an important part of his life:
"So I think music will most definitely be a part of my future output. I hope it is. But it’s going to run through a very different circuit, I would expect. I love music. I think it’s an immensely moving form for me, but how do I apply that to where I am now?"
Listen to "The Coldlands" and read the full Q & A with Michael Stipe here.
Last month R.E.M. released a non-limited edition version of their Record Store Day Unplugged collection, plus a massive rarities collection.

Soundgarden planning Badmotorfinger reissue; playing Fallon tonight
Soundgarden released the 20th anniversary edition of Superunknown today (available here), but for fans more interested in the band's 1991 album, Badmotorfinger, Kim Thayil's got you covered -- he told Billboard that Soundgarden is planning to release a deluxe anniversary reissue of Badmotorfinger with all the bells and whistles:
"There are some B-sides, live material, I believe there may be rehearsal material. 'Badmotorfinger' was very influential in the rock community. It had a strong influence on other musicians. 'Badmotorfinger' had an impact with listeners but also with guitarists and drummers and singers, people who started bands. It definitely deserves the same kind of treatment we're giving ('Superunknown')."
There is no release date for the reissue, though it'll likely be out in 2016 to commemorate the album's 25th anniversary. Meanwhile, Thayil also revealed that another Soundgarden b-sides/rarities collection (the one Soundgarden's been talking about for years) is still in the works and will eventually come out:
"I've been talking about that since the mid-90s -- people still ask me about it in the (online) forums. I thought when we got back together four and a half years ago we'd start on that project. But first we did the retrospective best-of (2010's "Telephantasm") and then a live record (2011's "Live on I-5") and then a new album (2012's 'King Animal') came out, and these tours came up and now 'Superunknown's' but the B-sides and all that stuff will be compiled in the future into a separate, stand-alone record."
Read the full interview with Thayil here.
