Ian MacKaye is aware Urban Outfitters is selling Minor Threat t-shirts and is cool with it. MacKaye was contacted by Washington City Paper to get his reaction to his band's shirts being sold at UO. MacKaye told the newspaper the shirts are being sold with permission (the shirts are licensed) and he's contracted an outside company to deal with t-shirt merchandising/licensing because he doesn't have time to chase down bootleggers and all the other assorted drama that comes with it. He did tell Washington City Paper that the whole idea of Urban Outfitters selling the shirts (and for 28 dollars) is "absurd" but "that's what motherfuckers want to pay for their shirts." Read the full report here (via AV Club).

Kitchens of Distinction return with their first new album in 19 years!  Folly will be released September 30th through 3 Loop Records. Patrick Fitzgerald revealed that he started working with Julian Swales in June 2011 - at the time they had no intention to write a record - they just played to have fun.  The music flowed, and they eventually put together a 10 song album which they finished in April 2013 while Fitzgerald was recovering from a nephrectomy. Fitzpatrick discussed the evolution of the album in a new blog posting, and explained a bit of the meaning of the album title:

"Yes, it’s Folly to try again. Yes, it was Folly in the first place, the daft idea of a being in a band. But without this madness, how pale our lives would be. Without those strange useless Follies that dot Britain how plain the landscape would be. Folie á Deux – a medical condition where two people share the same psychotic delusion. Folie á Trois? What a marvelous crazed thing we have made, full of hope."

Stream "Japan To Jupiter" in full below or from the BBC archive (forward the BBC archive to ~ 1 hour 45 minutes in to hear it)

This weekend, the Daily Record published an interview with Primal Scream's new bassist Simone Butler (Butler replaced Mani, who left to rejoin the reunited Stone Roses).  In the report there's a short mention of Butler beating out ex-New Order bassist Peter Hook for the job.  The article is available to read here.  Hooky, of course, is a legend and doing just fine on his own.  Don't miss him live when he tours North America this fall (Detroit show is September 11th at the Magic Bag and the full tour itinerary is posted here).

Meanwhile, Primal Scream unleashed the latest video from More Light today. Can't say it's the most exciting or visually stimulating video (it's basically Bobby Gillespie driving around) but the song is one of the best tracks from the critically acclaimed album.  Check out "Invisible City" below:

Primal Scream are playing shows in Europe over the next few months in support of More Light. So far, no U.S. dates have been announced.
Urban Outfitters in the U.K. is now selling Johnny Marr t-shirts.  Marr's legendary 'Johnny Fuckin Marr' tees for both men and women have been available on Marr's official store (the red one pictured below is badass!) since May, and now fans in the U.K. can also purchase a grey version of the shirt from Urban Outfitters.

Marr recently played a five song session for XFM - stream the audio archive here.  Marr's full set from Glastonbury is posted below:

J Mascis is playing with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight, so tune in to check him out!

UPDATE: The full episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon featuring J's appearance with the Roots is available to stream below. For those who just want to see J's part of the show: scroll to 6:18 to watch Fallon introduce J. Then scroll to 17:00 - 17:50 to see J play a bit of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and Fallon asks J about his guitar (Fallon's hinting worked! J gave Fallon a guitar after the show). At 29:38 - 29:55 J & the Roots play "Feel the Pain."

For more J Mascis awesomeness, stream his cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" below, plus watch Dinosaur Jr's set captured at Glastonbury 2013.

While you're at it, check out J's solo performance captured last October at Kennedy Center

Perry Farrell revealed on Twitter that a new Jane's Addiction song titled "Another Soulmate" will debut August 6th. Farrell also revealed that the song is Minutemen-short (clocks in at 2:30) but has a Led Zeppelin vibe. Check out Farrell's tweets below:

Though Farrell indicated the new song will debut on August 6th, one wonders if Jane's Addiction might just preview the song at Lollapalooza, which is this weekend in Chicago's Grant Park [after all, Lollapalooza is Farrell's party and he's definitely going to be there, so why not?]

Jane's Addiction hit the road for this summer's Uproar Festival, which also includes Alice In Chains, Coheed & Cambria, and more. Jane's Addiction tour dates (including some non-Uproar dates) are posted below:

Nine Inch Nails played their first live show since 2009 today at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. Unfortunately, the live stream from the festival was geo-blocked and was only accessible in Japan, or for those using a proxy. Fans who were able to access the stream reported there was some trouble with the feed cutting out, but it did work fine for others. The setlist was pretty phenomenal and included fan favorites, a few songs that haven't been performed since the 90s, and the live debut of "Came Back Haunted," "Copy of A," and "Find My Way." It's also worth mentioning that Rob Sheridan announced yesterday that the festival gigs will NOT have the same setlist as the Tension 2013 shows. Weekend, the fantastically fuzzy, post-punk band finally returned with the follow up to 2010's Sports, this week and it was indeed worth the wait. Their new album Jinx is a must listen for those who enjoy darker alternative bands like Joy Division, the Cure, Chameleons, and Jesus & Mary Chain. The album isn't quite as shoegaze/noise-heavy as Sports - but it's still full of brilliant gothy-retro sounds and is highly recommended listening. Also, it's worth mentioning that Jinx was written and recorded before Weekend relocated from San Francisco to New York City (the band's move isn't the reason for the different sound, instead they wanted to change things up to avoid repeating the past).

Grab Jinx from iTunes, Amazon, or Slumberland Records . It's also streaming on Spotify, Rdio, Sony Music Unlimited, and Google Play.

"Mirror"

Weekend debuted Jinx album track "Celebration, FL" live recently during a studio session for BTR. Check out the song and short interview with Weekend:

OMD posted two short updates on drummer Malcolm Holmes, who was rushed to the hospital July 19th after the band's show in Toronto.  The first update re-affirms that OMD will not be playing any live shows this year and also thanked Toronto Fire Department Paramedics for taking good care of Holmes:

OMD drummer Malcolm Holmes suffered from heat exhaustion that adversely affected his heart. As he has previously experienced serious heart problems, doctors have advised that he does not play drums for at least a few months. The band are not prepared to jeopardise Malcolm's long term health and have, therefore, decided to stop touring for this year.

The second update indicates that Holmes is now out of the hospital and will return to the U.K. on July 30th:

Update: Mal is finally out of hospital in Toronto and flies home next Tuesday. Once again thanks to all who have sent him their good wishes.

Catch up with OMD on their official website.

Rolling Stone premiered the alternate video for the Pixies' new single "Bagboy." The band released a new video, not because some media outlets criticized the original, but because they filmed two and couldn't really choose which one they liked best.  Black Francis told Rolling Stone both clips are creative and were made by up and coming filmmakers so they decided to release both.  Watch the alternate clip by Kestrel Media below [or if you don't want to suffer through the 30 second ad at the beginning visit Rolling Stone to check it out (ad free)].

The band's previous video for "Bagboy" by Lamar + Nik is posted below.

Peter Murphy is set to return with a new studio album soon. Murphy's 10th studio album, Lion, was produced by Youth, and is expected out in the coming months. According to a report in Exclaim! Murphy's manager announced the new album and played a preview video with song samples from Lion before Murphy took the stage at his show in Vancouver on July 20th. An official release date for Lion was not announced.

Peter Murphy wraps up his Bauhaus 35th anniversary Mr. Moonlight tour in North America this week. He'll return to Mexico for a one-off show in August before heading to South America for the tour's conclusion.  Reviews of most of Murphy's gigs have been very positive, though it's worth noting that some critics almost seemed disappointed they didn't see the disheveled-March 2013-mug-shot-version of the Bauhaus legend.

Richard Ashcroft's performed a solo acoustic set at Latitude Festival on July 20th.  The Guardian briefly mentioned his set (as part of their festival coverage) and had this to say:

'As for Richard Ashcroft, he got one of the most baffled responses. Playing a solo acoustic set, he struck a slightly unnerving note with his cropped hair and Edward Snowden T-shirt), ranting about "the Orwellian nightmare" that is our lives and berating other bands for being "fakers"'

FYI, one of the commenters on the Guardian piece called Ashcroft's performance "probably the best performance of the weekend" and pointed out that Ashcroft's t-shirt was about Bradley Manning, not Snowden. The t-shirt reads "Free Bradley Manning," so it's unclear where the Guardian went wrong with that, however in Ashcroft's July 9th interview with the BBC he said the following:

"I'd like to dedicate the whole performance to Mr. Snowden and I wish him good luck and a safe journey to somewhere potentially where he won't be hunted down and also Bradley Manning so basically anyone, any lovers of free speech, and freedom, and real art, come down and see me play."

The audio from the BBC interview (which also mentions new music coming in September) is posted below.  As for video from Ashcroft's Latitude set, not much has appeared other than this FANTASTIC pro-shot video of "Lucky Man":

UPDATE: Pro-shot video of "The Drugs Don't Work" plus fan-filmed video of "Sonnet" and "Bitter Sweet Symphony" are posted below.

BBC interview with Richard Ashcroft

In 2011 and again in 2012, Shaun Ryder announced he was participating in a new History Channel series on UFOs, titled Shaun Ryder on UFOs. The series follows Ryder around the globe in search of UFOs, exploring the history of UFO sightings, and separating fact from fiction. Ryder says he's been interested in UFOs after spotting one when he was a teenager in 1978. According to a 2012 interview with NME, part of the reason he decided to participate in the program is to give UFOlogists a better image:

"The thing is, right, a lot of UFOlogists, are fucking up it mate, they’re fucking proper, proper up it, and they give it a bad name," says Ryder. "You know, some are not UFOlogists, just fucking raving bonkers, you know, they’re just absolute knobheads. Then you’ve got some that are really smart and intellectual, and you’ve got real scientists as well."

Though the program was originally slated to air in 2012, the series has been pushed back to 2013.  Though no broadcast dates for Shaun Ryder on UFOs have been announced, it seems likely it'll premiere in the fall.  Ryder has been posting UFO news updates on the show's official Facebook Page.  Those interested in the program should give the page a 'like' to get updates on UFOs and the show.

To give you a taste of Shaun Ryder on UFOs, check out video of Ryder discussing UFOs below.

Morrissey has announced that his South American tour has been axed after being fraught with issues.  Apparently this time, the cancellation is due to funding issues and the dates will NOT be rescheduled.  Read his official statement on the matter below:

"I am informed today that the projected tour of South America is snuffed out, thus euthanized - due, I'm reliably advised, to lack of funding. It's quite easy to sell tickets, yet impossible to transport band and crew from F to G.

In a year when far too many disappointments have been buried this really is the last of many final straws, and I am not alone in feeling this. The future is suddenly absent, and my apologies are now so frequent as to be somewhat ridiculous, and it is I who apologize because no one else would bother. It is agonizing to be responsible for imparting such news - especially when it springs upon me unexpectedly and inexplicably. But the collapse of South America rings the curtain down with a colossal thud, and the major problems remain as insoluble now as they were in 2009. The obvious conclusion stares back at me from the mirror, and the wheels are finally off the covered wagon. Cancellations and illness have sucked the life out of all of us, and the only sensible solution seems to be the art of doing nothing.

As always I ask your pardon, and I offer pangs of overwhelming love and gratitude to the band and the crew, whose loyalty stretched above and beyond.

I shall see you in my dreams,

Morrissey"

Mark Gardener from Ride will be releasing a new album this year. In a May interview with Stereoboard Gardener revealed he recorded several more tracks with Robin Guthrie (they released a single last year "The Places We Go") and the collaborative album will likely be out in September or October:

"I've just listened to the rough mixes of all the tracks and I'm totally buzzed up with it. It's one of the best albums I have ever been involved in. I'm looking forward to releasing and playing more shows with Robin and the band."

During the interview, Stereoboard also asked Gardener what his favorite Ride song is:

"I don't really know what my favourite Ride song is but playing it live it always used to be 'Leave Them All Behind' as this, along with a few other songs in the set, gave me a transcendental kind of taking off with the crowd feeling."

Grant Hart returns with a double album, The Argument, based on John Milton's epic Paradise Lost on July 23rd. Stream the first single, "Is The Sky The Limit?" below:

Ahead of the album's release Hart was interviewed by The Fly. As always, Hart had a lot of interesting things to say.  He re-affirmed there won't be a  Hüsker Dü reunion***:

"First off, it would be a move motivated only by the wrong reasons. I’m afraid it would overshadow the good work we’re doing without that band’s name."

He also said part of the reason Hüsker Dü broke up was because Bob Mould's affinity for R.E.M.'s sound:

"they had such an influence on what Bob was trying to write after that."

Hart called Dave Grohl "a piece of shit" and though he didn't expound too much on that, he seemed to have an issue with Grohl's business practices.  Read The Fly's interview with Grant Hart here.

Mazzy Star return with a full length new album titled Seasons of Your Day on September 24th. The news of the album shouldn't be too shocking to fans - back in 2011 Mazzy Star released two songs, "Common Burn" and "Lay Myself Down," (which both appear on the upcoming album) and last year they performed at a few festivals, including Coachella and Primavera Sound. On the other hand, it IS the band's first full length album since 1996, which almost rivaled My Bloody Valentine territory (though in Mazzy Star's defense, they never taunted fans like Kevin Shields).

Along with the album news, Mazzy Star also debuted a song from Seasons of Your Day - stream "California" below:

Check out the tracklisting for Seasons of Your Day below (via Spin) plus stream two previously released album tracks below:

*The timing of the Mazzy Star news is odd because just yesterday J Mascis' cover of "Fade Into You" was featured on several music sites.  The cover is included on a bonus 7" that comes with the new limited edition Dinosaur Jr shoe.
Alison Moyet recorded a live acoustic cover of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" for One's agit8 'power of protest songs' campaign. Check out Moyet's fantastic performance below:

Moyet released her eighth studio album, the minutes, in June (the record came out a month earlier in the U.K.) and she'll announce some live dates in North America soon, so stay tuned!

Ghostly International has been home to some of the most creatively innovative musicians and artists around since 1999.  Ghostly's latest endeavor is a partnership with eyewear company Warby Parker.  The two recently announced they've teamed up to create a new collection of sunglasses.  One pair in the collection is titled Curtis - inspired by Ian Curtis, the late singer of Joy Division.  How does it all relate?  Founder of Ghostly, Sam Valenti IV, sees a pretty major parallel between enveloping yourself in music and throwing on a fantastic new pair of new shades:

"putting on a fresh pair of sunglasses transforms your mood as fundamentally as putting on a song you love."

Curtis is available in Ghostly Grey Matte (pictured above), or Revolver Black (pictured below).  Take a look at the whole Ghostly/Warby Parker collection here.

For every pair sold, Warby Parker will donate a pair of sunglasses to someone in need as part of their Buy A Pair, Give A Pair campaign. Find out more about the campaign here.
David Bowie returns with the new single "Valentine's Day." The track will be released as a 7" picture disc backed with the instrumental track "Plan" on August 20th in North America (August 19th in Europe). Today Bowie premiered the video for "Valentine's Day" - check it out below:

David Bowie released the new album The Next Day in February. So far he has not announced any live dates in support of the album.  For more on Bowie, visit his official site.
Adam Ant was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night and performed the new track "Vince Taylor" and the web-exclusive performance of "Goody Two Shoes." Watch both songs backed with dual drummer goodness below:

Adam Ant released the new album Adam Ant is The BlueBlack Hussar In Marrying The Gunners Daughter in January.  According to Ant, the album title in part refers to his experience with major labels (the phrase "marrying the gunner's daughter" is a naval term for punishment).  Some of the album was recorded at Boz Boorer's home studio.  [Boorer worked with Adam Ant previously and is best known as Morrissey's guitarist.]

A stage play inspired by a classic photo of Joy Division opened as part of Manchester's Greater Fringe Festival last night (Ian Curtis' birthday).   The production, New Dawn Fades: The Story of Joy Division, was written by actor/artist Brian Gorman, who recently explained to the Manchester Evening News that the play isn't a Joy Division tribute:

"It's definitely NOT a tribute - it's about the people...my play combines the band's history with the history of Manchester and Salford taking inspiration from Curtis's enigmatic lyrics.

This is the classic story of 4 ordinary lads who, inspired by the punk revolution of the 1970s, came together to form one of the most influential bands of all time."

New Dawn Fades: The Story of Joy Division runs for a three-day limited engagement.  Tickets for the production sold out well in advance, and proceeds benefit MIND (mental help non-profit organization in the U.K.).

Gorman is also reportedly releasing a graphic novel based around the same concept as the stage play in August.

Morrissey finally commented publicly on the recent South American tour drama and his bout of food poisoning.  He revealed it was a tomato/pasta dish that wreaked havok, and the whole ordeal forced him back to Los Angeles where he underwent five days of "round-the-clock" medical attention to get him back to health.   Read the full statement below or over at True To You:

"I can't give words to the sorrow I feel at the loss of perfect Peru. Oh, black cloud. After such a victorious and uplifting welcome of Lima love, the contaminated jinx had its way via a simple restaurant meal of penne pasta and tomato. Three hours later, both I, and security Liam have collapsed with a deadly and delirious bedridden disease. Five days of round-the-clock medical supervision just barely controls the corrosively toxic food poisoning. I know my luck too well. Sorrow replaces joy, and in every dream home a heartache. It could only be me.

I have returned to Los Angeles and to the expert supervision of my doctor Jeremy Fine, who assures me that I shall be fine (although not in the gossamer, powdery sense) for our upcoming shows in Argentina and Brazil. I have absolutely no idea where my beloved Chile has gone. In the heat of cancellations and postponements, the humiliation and mortification I feel on a personal level is too mammoth to be measured. If my spirits climb down any lower I could never again find the dignity to stand upright. We all live at the mercy of biological chance, and although I am not one to take refuge in clichés, I repeat my very servile apologies to any and all who back-packed their way to Peru. Alas, the dark shadow made the same journey.

Each year of life brings us nearer to our decline, but I will continue to seek a listener until I'm dead in a ditch."

As Morrissey indicated above, he'll return to South America at the end of the month for dates in Argentina and Brazil. From Morrissey's posting, it seems the axed Chile dates are in limbo, though the promoter for the Chile shows, Color Chile, recently announced the scrapped shows will be made up in August after the Brazil shows.  Stay tuned for more updates on the situation.

Morrissey is confirmed to play the following shows:

7/28 - Buenos Aires, Argentina @ Tecnopolis
7/30 - Sao Paulo, Brazil @ Credicard Hall
8/02 - Brasilia, Brazil @ Espaco Iguatemi
8/04 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil @ Citibank Hall
