Over the years, music photographer Kevin Cummins has shot tons of bands such as David Bowie, U2, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, and many of the Madchester bands. Cummins has had much of his work on display recently - the exhibit Manchester: So Much To Answer For features his work with the Smiths, and some of his New Order photos are currently on display in Berlin. Yet another exhibit, The Stone Roses: The Third Coming, recently opened in London and will run through August 12th. In conjunction with the exhibit opening, speaker manufacturer Sonos designed special edition speakers inspired by one of the Stone Roses' famous photos - the paint splatter shot.
Cummins discussed the iconic 1988 paint splatter shot with music journalist Lois Wilson at the exhibit opening in London. In the interview Cummins revealed he was determined to get a band defining shot of the Roses and decided to take some pictures inspired by some of guitarist John Squire's paintings. At the shoot, Squire was instructed to paint the band, but instead he took a gallon of paint, hurled it at remaining members of the band, and the rest was history.
Watch the interview with Cummins detailing the legendary photo shoot, plus check out the special design Play: 3 Sonos speakers below. Sadly, the special design Play:3 speakers are not for sale (only 20 were made total) but you can visit Sonos online to check out some other great (unsplattered) speakers.
