Iggy Pop - Taming of the Stooge
Iggy Pop was interviewed for this weekend's New York Times and talked health, music, and sex. In the interview, titled The Taming Of The Stooge, Iggy revealed that despite his heroin use over the years, he's lucky to be in pretty good shape:
"I’m a more than moderately healthy 65-year-old male who has gotten away with a lot of stuff."
He also commented that he wished he would have had more sex over the years, and went on to make the following characterization about his penis:
"I would characterize it sort of like a powerful interest group within a political party at this point. It used to be the entire political party."
Read the online (edited) version of the interview with Iggy Pop here. The full version of the interview can be found in the July 1st print edition of the New York Times.
Iggy Pop is also featured on Joe Jackson's full album tribute to Duke Ellington. Pop is featured on vocals for the classic "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" which you can take a listen to below, plus watch a short video of Jackson explaining how the collaboration with Iggy came about.

Joe Jackson - The Duke + tour
Joe Jackson returned this week with a new, yet sort of old, album. The album, The Duke, is a collection of ten Duke Ellington covers (new recordings of old songs by Duke Ellington, so it's new yet old.) One of the songs, "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" features Iggy Pop on vocals. Watch a couple of videos of Jackson talking about the project. The first video features Jackson explaining how the collaboration with Iggy Pop came about:

Stone Roses - Grand return to Manchester's Heaton Park
All eyes are on the city of Manchester as preparations are being made for the grand return of the Stone Roses. This weekend the band will return to the city for three massive sold out shows in Heaton Park. In advance of the gigs, city officials have sent out letters notifying the public about road closures, traffic/safety issues, and also the potential for noise (officials outlined the band's rehearsal/soundcheck schedule with curfews). A "community informational hotline" has also been set up, and fans are even being warned of the potential for bogus merch vendors selling "dodgy merchandise."
Members of New Order, Happy Mondays, Charlatans, and Inspiral Carpets are reportedly attending the shows, and you can pretty much bet Liam Gallagher will be at all three shows (Noel Gallagher is busy gigging on the Euro festival circuit, so he won't be showing up). Even some Hollywood types may be in attendance (though still no official word on whether self-proclaimed Roses' fan Brad Pitt will be making the trek.)
The media are gearing up for the Stone Roses as well: BBC Radio 6 will air a Stone Roses two-hour special Sunday from 6pm - 8pm BST (1pm - 3pm ET) and is taking suggestions for the program right now. NME has a special Heaton Park preview in this week's issue of the magazine. Then, of course, there's always the gossip rags attempting to stir up more Stone Roses drama.
The three night stand kicks off tomorrow with Primal Scream, The Wailers, The Vaccines, and Kid British all set to open tomorrow's show. Updates/video will be posted, so be sure to check back!

Tim Burgess - Oh No I Love You
Tim Burgess from Charlatans U.K. has announced details about his upcoming solo record Oh No I Love You (cover art posted above). The album features ten tracks including the new song, "The Doors Of Then," which was recorded in Nashville last year and features lyrics by Lambchop's Kurt Wagner. Burgess reveals how the collaboration came about:
The root of this album goes right back to a Kurt Wagner show in Manchester. It was the quietest yet the most powerful live performance I had ever seen and afterwards I carried Kurt's guitar to the car for him. I took the chance to ask him if he would ever consider writing a song with me. "Sure Tim, you write the music and I'll write the words." That one song turned into an album and almost ten years after we first talked about it, the album is ready and it's called Oh No I Love You
Stream "The Doors Of Then"
Oh No I Love You will be released on Burgess' label O Genesis on September 24th and will be available as a double cd or 2-LP set (both formats come along with bonus remix material), plus some album bundle options include an art print and lyric book. Take a look at the tracklisting below and pre-order Oh No I Love You here.

The Cure - Rock Werchter 2012
The Cure play the Rock Werchter 2012 festival in Belgium on Thursday (June 28th), and part of their set will stream live right here. The Cure are scheduled to play at 10:45 pm Belgian time (4:45 pm ET). It's unlikely that the band's full set will be webcast (they usually agree for only a portion of the set--usually an hour--to stream live) so it's unclear at this point whether their portion of the webcast will start at 4:45pm or a bit later. I'll update as more information becomes available.
The four day festival also features Pearl Jam, Kasabian, The Vaccines, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Noel Gallagher, M83, Simple Minds, Editors, Mumford & Sons, and tons more. *Note that all the bands playing will not be webcast live.

Peter Hook - Music Promotion Degree
Peter Hook has revealed to the BBC that he'll launch a master's degree program in music management promotion at the University of Central Lancashire. Hook has lots of experience to offer up, besides being a former member of Joy Division and New Order, Hooky will draw on his experience with Factory Records and legendary nightclub the Hacienda.
Hook has previously offered up band/management advice in his 2009 book How Not To Run A Club, but now he'll be personally teaching students on a one-on-one type of atmosphere. According to a report in The Telegraph, the course will be offered to 10 students who will be mentored "intensively," and will equip students with "business planning, presenting and formatting music for commercial release....as well as devising and executing marketing plans and promotional campaigns." But will the degree teach you to publicly feud with your old band mates?
Read the full report on Hooky's degree here.
Meanwhile, Peter Hook is set to release a new book about Joy Division before the end of the year. Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division will be released on paperback in the U.S. on December 1st and on hardcover in January 2013.

Mark Gardener appeared on Seattle's KEXP radio on June 21st for a live session before his show later that night at Barboza. Gardener played three new songs and Ride's classic "Twisterella." He also revealed one of the new songs, "The Places We Go," is a collaboration with Robin Guthrie (Guthrie also mentioned it briefly here) and will be released in July.

A sample featuring the forward by Heim, plus the accounts from Adam Franklin (Swervedriver), Pieter Nooten (Clan of Xymox), and Christophe Den Tandt (The Names), is available to view here. Blur have announced something special will be taking place July 2nd at 7:15 pm BST (2:15 pm Eastern) and have a countdown clock posted on their official site. They're not saying exactly what will be going down then, but they seem to indicate they'll be premiering new music. Yesterday they tweeted out a picture with lyrics "the flash of a blade is one less getting paid," which are from "The Puritan," the new song Damon Albarn premiered at Poem 2012 recently. Today they tweeted out another picture which are lyrics to "Under The West Way," a song Albarn and Graham Coxon debuted at the Brit Award War Child benefit in February.
It seems almost certain Blur will release "The Puritan" and "Under The West Way" on July 2nd, with perhaps the band performing the songs live somewhere (British radio, television, or a live webcast) at 7:15 pm BST. Stay tuned for more details and visit the band's official site for the latest.

Radiohead - Stage collapse update
Update on Saturday's stage collapse in Toronto:
A tragic event took place Saturday at what was to be Radiohead's final stop on their North American tour. Only an hour before gates were scheduled to open at Downsview Park in Toronto, the stage collapsed as crew members were setting up the stage. The top portion/roof of the stage came down in what was reported to be mere seconds, killing one person and injuring three more. Reports indicate there were around 20 people near the stage when it came crashing down. Other witnesses who were in the venue at the time report the crash sounded like fireworks, with the moments immediately following turning into a scene of chaos and confusion where no one knew what to do next. Police evacuated the venue and surrounding area and attempted to notify ticket holders that the Radiohead show was canceled*.
On Sunday, the victim was confirmed by the BBC (and later, Radiohead) to be Radiohead's drum tech, Scott Johnson. The 33 year old Johnson previously worked with Keane, White Lies, and a recent Pink Floyd production in Australia. Radiohead's Philip Selway posted the following statement on the band's website:
We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him.
Toronto police are investigating the cause of the collapse, but say they are in the very "early stages" of the investigation. Weather is not considered to be a cause of the collapse as it was a sunny day (no wind, rain, etc.)
Here's video of an aerial view of the aftermath:

Radiohead - Stage collapse
An outdoor stage at Downsview Park in Toronto collapsed this afternoon killing one person and injuring three others just hours before Radiohead was scheduled to play, and only one hour before gates at the venue were scheduled to open. None of the Radiohead or Caribou stage crew were injured in the collapse. According to eyewitness reports, the scaffolding fell in "seconds" and appeared to begin in the center of the stage. Police are investigating the cause of the collapse, though it seems clear that weather is not a factor in today's catastrophe. Take a look at the aftermath here. Elizabeth Fraser - live return
Cocteau Twins' vocalist Elizabeth Fraser is set to make her live return later this summer. Fraser hasn't played a full concert since 1998, but she'll be back on stage making fans swoon at an intimate gig in Bath August 4th at the Bath Pavillion. The show is a warm up for Fraser's two sold out gigs that take place August 6 and 7 at London's Festival Hall.
Fraser will be debuting some new material and performing re-interpretations of Cocteau Twins' songs at the show. Read Fraser's statement about the Bath show on her website and read NME's report here.
Cocteau Twins "Crushed"
If you like the Cocteau Twins take a look/listen to a radio session Robin Guthrie did last year in Seattle - the music is awesome, but it's missing Fraser's beautiful vocals!

Morrissey - not retiring + lawsuit over?
Last week the interwebs were agog with news that Morrissey would be retiring at the age of 55. Morrissey has now posted his own statement through True To You about the reported retirement:
Morrissey would like to stress that reports of his 'retirement', as excitably earmarked by several newspapers and websites are "wishful thinking" on behalf of the writers.
Update: Pitchfork is now reporting that the NME/Moz lawsuit is over, though they are citing the same Music Week report that was posted yesterday.
If the Music Week report is true, I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed that there won't be unfolding court drama next month, but I guess it's a win for Morrissey and NME. Celebrate the victory (of sorts) with a Morrissey concert from 1991.
Stone Roses - Amsterdam - Heineken Music Hall
Three shows into the Stone Roses' reunion tour and there's already drama. According to several reports from last night's show at the band's show in Amsterdam, at the end of the show (pre-encore) drummer Reni stormed off the stage and left, leaving Ian Brown to inform the crowd the show was over: "the drummer's gone home. I'm not kidding you...the drummer's gone home. Sorry about that." Brown went on to call drummer Reni a "c**t" then shrugged his shoulders and left the stage.
Reports are mixed as to what really happened--some say it was the end of the show anyway, and Reni didn't feel like playing an encore. Others report that Reni was annoyed at Brown for some comment he made during the show.
Watch video of Brown informing the crowd that the show was over:
NME is reporting that "a spokesperson" for the band has indeed confirmed the Stone Roses tour will continue despite the Amsterdam incident.

Morrissey vs NME - NME apology
Here's the latest bit of news in the Morrissey vs NME drama--if you're not familiar with the case, you can get up to speed here--NME has now publicly apologized to Morrissey. Read the full statement below:
In December 2007, we published an article entitled 'Morrissey: Big mouth strikes again'.
"Following this, Morrissey began proceedings for libel against us. His complaint is that we accused him of being a racist off the back of an interview which he gave to the magazine. He believes the article was edited in such a way that made him seem reactionary.
"We wish to make clear that we do not believe that he is a racist; we didn't think we were saying he was and we apologise to Morrissey if he or anyone else misunderstood our piece in that way. We never set out to upset Morrissey and we hope we can both get back to doing what we do best."
Moz has previously refused to accept an apology from NME's editors, so it remains to be seen whether this will be deemed acceptable. Morrissey's case against NME is scheduled to be heard in London's High Court on July 16th through the 19th, and Morrissey is reportedly attending each day of the proceedings.
