Radiohead played a very sold out show at the Roseland in New York City last night. Kid Rock was even in the crowd visibly singing to the band's performance (sure, Chris Martin was there too, but isn't KR more of a shocker?) You can read the New York Times' review of the show here. The band will be playing Roseland again tonight.
Check out "Street Spirit" from one of the band's two encores last night!

Last week, Rolling Stone asked readers to choose their favorite R.E.M. songs of all time, and today the results of the poll were published. Not surprisingly, the top 10 songs are mainly the band's biggest hits, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (full disclosure: I seriously love all the songs on the list except for #4, and I have no idea why I've never liked that song.) Check out the list here (slideshow format unfortunately).

Here's the trailer for the upcoming boxset The Smiths: Complete:
The Smiths: Complete will be available in the U.S. in mid-October, but you can pre-order now. If you're interested, keep in mind there are a couple of different versions of the collection. There's the massive Super Deluxe version with the band's 8 cds, vinyl, rare singles and more, and there's also a more scaled down version containing only the 8 cds. iTunes will also be selling a digital version of the collection.

More news on the Cure today: first we learned the band was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame 2012, and now the band has confirmed the last handful of dates on their Reflections tour. This tour features the Cure playing their first three albums (Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds and Faith in their entirety.) As it turns out, the lucky, lucky, peeps in New York and L.A. get multiple Cure dates, while all the other chopped liver areas around the U.S. and Canada get shut out (again). If you're up for a road trip, dates have been posted here and tickets go on sale September 30th. If it's any consolation, I'd bet at least one of these shows will be filmed for a future DVD release, although they did already release a live Trilogy DVD a few years ago.

Good news if you're a fan of Creation Records. The peeps behind the Creation Records documentary, Upside Down: The Creation Records Story, have officially struck a deal with a distributor in the U.S., which means a stateside release date for the film is coming soon! Watch the trailer below:

Radiohead performed on Saturday Night Live last night. You can watch "Lotus Flower" and "Staircase" here (via NME). I'd click over soon, SNL has historically been pretty protective of their show and the video will likely be pulled down soon. Don't miss Radiohead tomorrow on an hour long episode of The Colbert Report.

Peter Hook has been on tour with his band The Light playing classic Joy Division records Unknown Pleasures and Closer. A few weeks ago the tour was in New York and Moby joined Hooky on stage for the encore. Last night the tour was in Chicago and hours before word leaked that Billy Corgan would be joining Hooky on stage for a couple of songs. Check out Corgan belting out "Transmission" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart."
Another highlight of the show was "Ceremony" which you can watch here.
Peter Hook & The Light continue on the road for the tour, and there won't be a Detroit date. But if it DID stop in Detroit, who would Hooky invite onstage for the encore? Jack White isn't in town, plus he's currently out of his mind (seriously, Jack, ICP???). Iggy Pop isn't in town but he would have been an awesome choice. Other huge Detroit names like Kid Rock, Eminem, or Aretha would be a trainwreck (though I'd pay huge money to see Aretha attempt it). Maybe Windsor's Daniel Victor from Neverending White Lights or the guys from Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr? Ah well, a Detroit show is not gonna happen anyway, but fun food for thought...

R.E.M. called it quits today. This statement was posted on the band's official website today:
"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.
R.E.M. have been at it since 1980, releasing tons of great records, putting on spectacular live shows, and influencing countless bands. Thanks for all the years of great music, R.E.M. :)

In totally unrelated news, website The Daily Swarm posted a nude picture of Michael Stipe today. Apparently it's a shot from a video that Stipe himself posted on his Tumblr account. You can click over to the Daily Swarm to see the picture, but keep in mind it's NSFW and if you click the link you will see the full nude. You've been warned, so don't send (any more) bitchy emails* to me unless it's about something else. Here's the NSFW link.
*I don't mind bitchy emails, in fact, I usually encourage that type of thing, however use your bitchiness for good, not evil.

Lots of Radiohead news today, and it's really exciting if you live in New York (lucky bastards!) Radiohead will be in New York later this week for the season premiere of Saturday Night Live and while in town they're going to make the most of it. Next Monday (September 26th) they'll appear on the Colbert Report, then on September 28th and 29th they'll play shows at Roseland Ballroom. Ticket info can be obtained here.

The Jesus & Mary Chain are reissuing ALL of their cds over the next couple of weeks as 2 CD/1 DVD sets. Take a look at all the reissue goodness here. Just a head's up though, these are U.K. imports, which means if you try to buy them directly from the band's site (via U.K. e-tailers) you'll have to convert currency and pay those pesky international $hipping rate$. But there's an easier (and cheaper) way: if you want the reissues, just wait another week or so and buy them (as imports) from Amazon with free shipping to boot. No, I don't work for Amazon, I'm just looking to simplify things for you.
Psychocandy & Darklands will be available September 27th, Automatic and Honey's Dead drop October 4th, then Stoned & Dethroned and Munki complete the series October 11th.

Shaun Ryder from the Happy Mondays released his autobiography, Twisting My Melon, today. He recounts the Madchester days, heroin addiction, and more. I haven't read this yet, but it sounds phenomenal. Here are two reports on the book from NME and Gigwise.

Radiohead's "Exit Music (For A Film)" is one of my all time favorite Radiohead songs. If you love the song too, you might be into this (suggested by the person who uploaded the embedded video below onto YouTube): Visit this website and once you've got the audio there going, press play on the video below and listen to both at the same time. Try it, it's pretty cool.

A documentary about the Oxford music scene, Anyone Can Play Guitar-The Oxford Music Scene Documentary, will be released on October 31st. New Musical Express has already sang praises about the film, calling it "one of the 10 vital music docs of 2011." Anyone Can Play Guitar features music from influential bands out of Oxford, England, such as Ride, Radiohead, Swervedriver, Supergrass, and the Candy Skins.
It's pretty exciting news that the film is finally coming out, because there for awhile it looked like the film was going to be shelved. After shooting, director Jon Spira ran into some financial issues which led to the film's delay, but after a successful online fundraising campaign, the film is indeed ready for a proper release on DVD. The lucky peeps in the U.K. will also have the opportunity to attend screenings on the indie cinema tour, which also promises some live musical performances from Oxford bands past and present. Ordering info is forthcoming, so be sure to keep an eye on the film's official website and Facebook page.

Back a few months ago, Rhino U.K. announced plans to release a super duper Smiths collection, The Smiths-Complete, which you can still pre-order from Rhino U.K. here. However, as of today, Rhino U.S. started taking pre-orders for this same collection, and the nice thing is that you won't have to pay the hefty shipping fees since you're buying it stateside. Rhino U.S. will be selling only 750 copies, so if you're interested in this, I'd order it now.
Of course, you may also want to check out what appears to be THE VERY SAME COLLECTION at Amazon, because it's even cheaper than the version Rhino is selling (almost 150 dollars less). Regardless, do what you've gotta do, I'm just passing along the info...

Dinosaur Jr are reissuing their first three albums, Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug, on October 4th. You can now pre-order the albums here.
Dinosaur Jr have also announced dates for a short West Coast tour in the fall where they'll play Bug in its entirety. Henry Rollins will be conducting a short interview on stage live before each show. For dates, visit the band's official website.
Back in 1991 Dinosaur Jr toured with Sonic Youth and Nirvana in Europe. Sonic Youth put together a documentary about that legendary tour, (which will be reissued on DVD tomorrow). Watch Dinosaur Jr. play "Freak Scene" from 1991: The Year Punk Broke below.

Today I stumbled upon this fun cover of Kraftwerk's song "The Model" by Balanescu Quartet:
Here's the original Kraftwerk version:
Big Black's version is pretty good too:
And then there's Ride's straight ahead version recorded for the NME 40th anniversary compilation titled Ruby Trax (it's a 3-disc set of covers, cool rare stuff if you can find it floating around somewhere).

New Order announced today that they're reforming for a couple of benefit shows this fall. I'm not sure it should really be called a reunion, because while Gillian Gilbert will be taking part, bassist and founding member, Peter Hook most certainly will not. Hooky will be busy playing classic Joy Division albums on his Unknown Pleasures/Closer tour, but I'm also guessing he wasn't asked to be a part of the N'Order reunion anyway.

Iggy Pop sustained multiple fractures to his leg in Romania on August 27th after tripping over a microphone stand on stage. Iggy has been sidelined for at least six to eight weeks while the injuries heal. Consequently, the four shows the Stooges had lined up for later this month have been canceled.
If you like the Stooges, be sure to check out Raw Power Live: In The Hands Of Fans on Blu-Ray and DVD on September 27th. This release features footage of the band's 2010 performance of Raw Power at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, plus a special interview Iggy did with the six fans who filmed the show.
